So, you cant get one converted, i was stationed in Germany, and you could buy a car from there, have it converted, then shipped state side. You cant do that with these trucks?? |

Anything less than 25 years old has to go through an importer. The newer the car -- or truck -- the more that needs to be converted to meet DOT regulations. A Pointer was never even offered in the states, so you might literally be spending thousands of dollars and waiting months on end to make it work out.
A few years ago, Bill Gates wanted to bring a Porsche into the US that was not offered here. Even he bailed out on that idea. |

Nice, $16k is a lot of money but considering it's already in the US it's worth it. |

Wow did not know that
wikipedia wrote: U.S. sales of Volkswagen Type 2 vans in pickup and commercial configurations were curtailed by the Chicken Tax
Assholes :x
.. and its still in effect today, amazing.
Guess the Rabbit pickup is also explained due to the fact that it's a Rabbit ...
Tho the Pointer also would qualify, as the Pointer / Gol is a compact car .. just one we never got North of Mexico. |

Actually, I had to pay for tags on my Rabbit-based Pickup the same as if it were a Ford F-150. The chicken tax didn't apply because they were built in Westmoreland, Penn.
The Pointer would have to come in through a specification alteration or some slippage through the cracks of all of the laws that exist. The latter is beyond me but I have heard stories on similar cases ... |

Damn chicken tax...that truck is bad ass. I guess laws are passed so that we are limited to buying american cars. If those and other similar trucks were sold in the states sales of japanese and american trucks would go down.

This one's supposedly US-legal and is in Denver, it looks pretty nice. It's had the ricer treatment, but should be fairly easy to return to a semi-stock look.
If I were you though, I'd just buy a decent Caddy (Rabbit pickup) or Vanagon Doka and wait until you can import a Pointer into the USA without any problems. |

since when are fitting schmidts considered ricer treatment!? :?
that one had to have slipped through the cracks.
i also know of a ouple of audi S3's that came through mexico.
i'm registering my gray market golf III variant through a buddy in canada.
if you want it bad enough there's always a way around the red tape. |
