My Vanagon sliding door does not unlock from the in or outside. It seems that the un-lock knob on the inside cannot be moved far enough to unlock the door. It is kind of in the middle?
Any suggestions?
When is the door unlocked - with the knob in upper or lower position?

Question: do you have the power door locks? My sliding door latch jammed in a similar fashion when the passenger side power lock mechanism switch failed in the locked position. If you have PDL's, it could also be a failed sliding door power lock.

Try this: If you have an 82 pop-off the inside door panel. Take a look at the latch. First spray with WD40 than spray with chain saw lubricant. You might be able to also adjust the cable to get it to catch or you can play with the latch mechanism and might be able to free it up.

I just noticed you have an '82. I agree with last poster that taking the door cover off (careful with the brittle plugs and soft door panel material) and adjust the bowdoin cable that connects front handle with rear latch. Adjustment may not be needed, but good to know that you can...

The locking knob problem may be due to a broken internal spring. This spring is unrepairable. It may be broken and interfering with knob action. See if that is so and fish out broken bits. To mimic the action of the spring, ie keep the knob up when up, slip a small section of rubber hose over the knob boss so that it provides friction to keep the knob up when up, and down when down :)

That worked for me for years.
