Okay, is this just a RHD thing or are the pictures reversed or what?
It looks like this SC has the gas door on the left side?
from this ad: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=892939 the link to more pics has pics that show it more clearly |

I got my hands over some panels from a 55 barndoor pickup. This is NOS panels (not the treasure chest door) that got fitted and painted just before the the truck got stored away. Both have the gas door opening. The opening in the short side is blocked of.

Why would there be the need to change the fuel door location from one side to the other? Originaly they had to choose one side or the other of course but why switch the location just because its a right hand drive vehicle? |

My guess is because of the traffic driving on the left side with RHD vehicles. In Sweden we had LHD vehicles but we drove on the left side until 66-67. Maybe that can explain swedish trucks having the gas door on the left side. Maybe there were gas taps just beside the road at that time? |

I have not seen that hinged piece before. Is it protecting the fuel tap? That could be an add-on for Australia or other "dusty" areas. |

I would say 1-off unless other people with Barndoors from your area have the same "accessory". |
