Why not let people who know WTH their doing create the products? I put two links above with products DESIGNED for auto rubber and what do we get after? Vaseline, veggie oil, di-electric grease...use this, don't use that. :roll:

On my car I'd use products MADE FOR CARS. You got dry skin? Vaseline. You wanna deep fry some potatos? Veggie oil. Wanna stop your auto electric components from corroding? Di-electric grease.

I'm told that this is one of the best products to use... this stuff will actually revitalize cracking rubber and look new again. I have no idea how that works, but I have seen it.

I just accept it as part of it's aging process. I'll wipe it down with a wet cloth to get the dust and dirt off, but otherwise, nothing.

How do NOS rubber parts change and advance, Mark? Aftermarket ones change and advance, that I'll give you. Aftermarket rubber hardens up and cracks in about 1/20th the time the old "non- advanced" stuff did.

You should buy a Bay Bus. That way you could go in there and join the others who tell people how the other factory specs and recommendations no longer apply because "times have changed" and these cars "are 40 years old now". :lol:

All Im sayin is my wifes tale vasoline tonic works-and has worked since Ive owned my 63 notch since 01. It keeps my old original rubber looking tops. And that shit right there ^^^^^ that tram said about the original "old" German rubber compared to the "new" stuff is dead nutts true. :wink: Ask Neil how sorry he was for sellin me his nos tail light rubber :twisted:

You both get me wrong. I'm not saying the re-pop crap rubber made now is superior to the original German stuff; not at all.

WHAT I AM SAYING is we have better, more modern, better chemically engineered products to care for rubber/vinyl NOW, whether OG/old or new, besides Vasoline or talcum powder. Both belong in the bathroom or nursery; not the garage or shop.

The original NOS stuff has lasted because, in most cases, it never saw ANY U.V. light/soap/polish etc, wasn't installed on an actual car in real world conditions and wasn't messed with in general. The stuff that was is TRASHED like any other ~40 yr old rubber. Take a look at ANY original VW. Hell even the rubber on the '66 Westy is trashed and it was stored INDOORS for over 10 yrs.

Use something DESIGNED for rubber and vinyl. JMO.

And I almost jizzed on my car when I heard the 2.1 liter come to life, so I know what you're refering to..... :wink:

Mark you know how much my 63s been out and about. Never a trailor queen by any means. Ive left it out lots-atleast half the time Ive owned it. In the weather both here and in Seattle. If anything the paints faded but not the rubber. My guess is that the rubber on my car actualy contains rubber-extracted from a rubber plant. So it like the lavish lube-sometimes vanilla sented :wink: I put on it. The new stuff is some plastic vinyl concoction deal that dosnt seem to last. I have a real-cosmoline coated set-front rear early fat trim rubber set Id of thought I would of had to put on this car long ago. But the vasoline keeps it awsome.
