Can you use later backing plates and drums on the rear of a Barndoor? Are there any substatutes of brake shoes? Drums?

If you swap the stub axles out for the later style you can install later drums and backing plates.

will any stub axles work? or only small nut style. Are all stub axles the same ratio? Are there better ones for highway speeds?

don't know if this helps, but here's all the stub axles. This is in hazetguys gallery and he lists all the sizes and ratios as well. BD is the short one.

Ha Rick, is there a combo for the RGB that i should be looking for to get the best highway gearing? better top end.

sort of out of my realm of knowledge, but I don't think you'd want to mess with the gearing in the RGB. If you want better highway gearing you'll need to rework the center section (i.e. freeway flier).

its a 1950 bus...find the correct gearbox...pull it apart clean it and put it back together...highway mileage and top speed should not be of any importance...
