That thing rocks. That would make working on the underside of these vehicles so easy. No more laying on the ground, or working above your head.

Purely for use with the body "shell" when you're doing a strip down restoration or major body work. 3000 lbs MAX, so this wouldn't support a Vanagon anywhere near assembled. My nephew has one of these (not this brand but similar) in his body shop, and uses it only when everything has been stripped. He does frame off restorations of 60s/70s muscle cars.

Not so sure about that if you get the right one.
Here's a double cab from the gallerys.

my biggest concern, is rolling it over on the 'suspension' with so much side load. and twisting the rubber bushing outta whack or tweaking a control arm. I think I would have to have it have a catch just under the roof lip channel (gutter) myself.

Yeah, that is exactly the one that got me started on this search. They seem to be fairly widely used in Britain and I've seen the ads in English car magazines. The Autovip website even shows a bus being rolled with one.

I am not sure what that system would cost to have sent here, but I highly recommend checking out a mid rise scissor lift as a first hoist.
I have a Snap On and can do everything from wheels and tires, brakes, engine swaps and bodywork easily with this unit.
It will lift a Syncro 58" off the ground in 20 seconds.
Cost new is huge, I bought mine off eBay and was 20 miles away for less than $2000.
Worth every penny and very safe.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. It would be great to have a lift like the snap-on.

My problem at home is that I am "altitude limited". My garage is just too low to lift my vans significantly, and rolling is really the only option.

I suggest, if at all possible, doing some Garage Mods, and then buying a regular lift. They can be found for about $1000 if you look hard enough. I saw an ad on craigslist the other day for an auto shop that was closing down, and was selling a lift for $800.

That's a pricey endeavor though.
