An update for those looking for the latest delivery times. I ordered one for my '75 convertible on November 18th and I just received it today, quicker than expected! One little surprise is that it has the original engine and was delivered in San Antonio Texas, which would explain the solid body. One detail that's a little confusing is that it lists the tire size as 5.60-15 whitewalls. Weren't all later cars 6.00-15 or was it either/or? If anyone knows please let me know

We have owned our 1972 Super Beetle for 22 years.

We are the second family to own the car.

Although I have many original documents such as the purchase invoice, the Monroney window sticker, the owners manual, the sales brochure, and many repair invoices, none of them listed the engine number.

Therefore, I decided it was time to order the Birth Certificate.
Ordered on 01.01.24.
Received on 01.24.24.

My Super Beetle was born on 03.09.72.
Delivered to San Francisco on 03.14.72.
Note: That seems like a quick delivery from Germany to San Francisco.

I am happy to see that the AE engine number that I submitted to Classic Parts did match the VIN and engine number on file in the VW Archive records. :D

The special configuration M-codes listed several that could be identified.
Like M-290 - Looks like I will have to find some rear mud flaps.

However, a few M-codes were considered indefinite:

M534
M698

66foot, very nice! I wish someone could Help Me Understand how VW can't identify SO many of the M codes. I have three on one of my '75s that can't be identified

They may have changed the format and/or text since I last ordered one. The last one I got, in 2015, listed the dates as "Built On" and "Left the Factory On." So it was a ship date, not a delivery date. (Mine also shipped to San Francisco.)

That makes a lot more sense as it's easy to imagine it taking 5 days from completion to loading on a ship, but very hard to imagine a ship going from Germany to San Francisco, via the Panama Canal, in 5 days.

Ordered my 1961 Beetle Convertible BC on 1/6/2024, received 1/27/2024.

Learned something new.. Option code M912 ...never knew that chromium fender beadings were an option for convertibles... 8) ...
Would be interesting to see with its Ruby Red paint color IMO :-k

I ordered 3 - one for my single cab, one for my deluxe, and one for my friend's standard. I ordered them on January 13th (a Saturday, so effectively the 15th) and got them February 10th.

Bad news: My '1957' Deluxe is actually considered a 1958 by the birth certificate people.
Good news: The engine is indeed the original
But it gets a two-page birth certificate, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

My single cab is registered as a 1956, but is considered a 1957.

Throughout the various Birth Certificate threads, people report wacky things about the dates - the spread between them, different than model year, different than M-code plate, etc. I had the old BC but ordered the new style; same results: my M-code plate reads 06 4, but the BC says 'Manufacturing Date 5 May, 1965' and 'Delivery Date 11 May 1965'

My transmission, chassis and front axle numbers are all late April/early May, which matches the date range they provided. Asking about that, the BC people replied

"yes sometimes this can happen if a Chassis was planend earlier but had a dely in production."

So that's one explanation. With the assumption that 'manu date' is when they started assembly and 'delivery date' is when it passed final inspection and went to the loading dock, I'd say you could get a good estimate of number of cars built per day... but then I see people with dates implying car was built in one day! That one's gotta be a bit sloppy.

Anyways, short of someone translating all those line-worker interviews I've read about, that's as close to an 'official' explanation of one discrepancy we're getting.

Anyone know what it means when it says “Main” after Frankfurt as the delivery location? Surprised to see manufactured date and delivery date as the same don’t think I’ve seen that before.

Frankfurt am Main - Frankfort on the river Main, in Hesse, vs. the other Frankfurts like Frankfurt an der Oder.

Also, the BC people mentioned that the first date is the day it passed inspection, ie was done, and the secod the day it left VWs possession; in other words, it was driven/hauled to a dealer, or sent to a departure port. So your car was finished, and then left to be delivered locally right after.

the manufacturing date it is the date when it was finished.

The delivery Date depends, sometimes it is the moment it left the factory, sometimes when it was deliverd to a customer. Usually the latter on "newer" cars around start of the 80s"

Hoping to help someone out who is looking for how/where to order your VW Birth Certificate. The VW Museum stopped issuing these in 2019 and have since been issued by VW Classic Parts. I tried to order from their site but as someone else mentioned, the drop down did not give me the option to ship to the US. I reached out and they provided me with this link which worked! Ordered my certificate and data sheet this morning for E129.00 (USD $141)

Hey folks,
I have a newly acquired Velvet Green (under a couple of other layers of paint) 65 Notchback that was said to have been sold in Switzerland then imported to the US. I just got my certificate and it has Birrfeld, Switzerland as the pickup location which appears to be an airport. Does anyone else have a car that was delivered here? Just trying to figure out more history on my car.

what luck! googling 'birrfeld vw' resulted in this photo from 69 of the 'vw lager' or depot at birrfeld - notice the train which delivered the cars

Wow, that is so cool Finster! Nice sleuthing on your part. So if I'm understanding this the cars were brought into Switzerland by rail then this was the logistic arrival center and the local dealers then picked them up in this part (or all?) of the country. And this was not just VWs here in Birrfeld but other marques as well such as BMW.
I wonder if there is any way to track where my Notch went from here? I guess I would look up local VW dealers in existence in 1965 nearby first such as Zurich or Basel (Birrfeld airport is midway between the two cities).

Thanks again Finster for the follow up about AMAG. I have a lot of paperwork that came with my car and I just called the wife of the former owner and he worked at the US embassy in Bern, Switzerland and was in Air Force intellgence there in the 70s. She said he didn't buy the car new.

Just got my birth certificate and had a couple questions:
-If I supplied the engine serial number and it got placed on the cert is it the factory engine?
-Does anyone know what the A72 means?
