Hi, can anyone post a pix of a 54 BD Deluxe starter button please. I don't know exactly what to look for without a picture. Also i have two holes in the side of the dash, which one does the starter go in and what is the other for?
thanks in advance.
Graham.

Just for more info - the "Zwitter" one above was also used on 1953 Barndoors.

or would this be from the same time spane as the zwitters
10/1952 and 03/1953 ??

Diameter of the starter button would be of interest too (as I'm building a new pod housing and don't know the original dia. ) could anybody get a measurement of it ? would be appreciated. Thanx

it measures about 19mm diameter.
and to answer Grahams other question,i believe the other hole is likely for a lighter.
this is an earlier dash, couldnt find a 54 dash but gives the idea.

I do not know.

I agree on 19mm wide.

My original is also approx. 40mm in length.
Complete length from button to wire mount but not including the screw for the wiring.

My '55 only has 1 hole, here you go

But yes, it could be an accessory lighter as seen above.

What size hole does the lighter need?

Hi Rockstock.
Thats a surprize , that's a pix of my samba, in my garage i think.
I don't remember taking out the starter button that is in the pix. What i do now know is i have welded up the starter button hole  . so now i will have to try and make it again without damaging the new paint, and find somthing to put in the hole that maybe i should have welded up

If you want any measurements, let me know and I can pull my starter button out to measure the location of the starter button hole.

Unless someone already has a Deluxe dash or measurements available.

Thanks for the offer Everett, but i can see where the hole was from behind. the problem is making a new hole without damaging the new paint.

My June 17, 1953 kombi came with a zwitter starter button from the factory. Definitely after zwitter production ended. It is probably another one of those parts that was used until stock was depleted at the factory. Or it could have been used through the end of production in '53, I guess. Anyone else with post-zwitter production '53 busses that came with a zwitter starter button?

I guess it would be interesting to know how early they were used too. Anyone with a bus built in '52 with a zwitter starter button?

For what it's worth, my bus also came with the standard (black) zwitter heater knob.

There were a lot of one year only parts in '53.

Tape the whole area off then drill?

Tape should prevent big chips from occurring and also any damage if the drill bit wanders.

Use tape as Ev suggests and use a chassis punch if you have one. This will make a cleaner hole. We all know how important that is.

Chassis punch? interesting, never seen or heard of one of those.
I guess you drill a small hole for the bolt then post it through and tighten it up and it cuts the hole?

Right, you drill a pilot hole, insert the punch and tighten it up to cut the hole. Electricians use these to "knock out" holes in electrical boxes. Sometimes they are referred to as "knock out punches", just like Ev's left jab.

They are mostly used for thinner gauge sheet metal. Putting some light oil on the threads and the cutting face helps. For larger punches they use a hydraulic wrench to drive the bolt.

Here is an overview:

Graham, i had to do the same for my semaphore switch. I drilled a 12mm hole then used a small grinder to open the hole out to fit the switch. It worked without damaging the paint.

When do we get to see the bus?
