Does anyone have any idea if this hole should be plugged? Pulled transmission out clean it off to find this? Book doesn’t say much about it from what I read... any help is appreciated! Cool :!: :?:

It should have a freeze plug in it. They used the same case on tranverse VW's and that's where the fill tube installed. |

There is a pressed in steel plug.

Alternatives? Is there any force back there? Could I get away with just pounding a rubber cork in there? |

No force, but you'd want something that would survive. You could tap it and install a pipe plug. |

No idea, what's in it? The majority of my posts are from memory. I have no memory of that part of the case and too lazy to go up on the loft to look at a spare I have sitting there. |

That's not the transmission, it is the final drive case.
Why the dimple?
No idea but contour adds strength to an item. No gears? no bearings? Why have an inside void?
Never opened one, it could be a support area for something.

If it is not drilled though you could just spray it with brake cleaner, blow it out, and then fill it with silicone. |
