Is it possible to test a mechanical EGR valve from a 1975 setup for vacuum before installing it in a working system? Picture for confirmation.

Page 31 of the Fuel Injection Manual shows the test procedure.

Thanks, but it requires that the valve be installed and engine running. I'm trying to figure out if the unit I have is good or not, so that I can either A) acquire the other necessary parts or B) not install the EGR.

Oh... In that case, my answer is... I dunno.

It would be easy enough to check if the diaphragm is intact, but that won't tell you if the EGR is functioning correctly. Where's Raygreenwood when you need him?

Suck on the vacuum nipple, maybe with a hose extension, and watch the "ball" in the bottom move. I've actually never seen a bad one; just a pipe clogged and a gasket or two missing.

That valve uses the solenoid to direct vacuum to close the valve. IIRC, without power (or with the cable detached), the valve is open, and passes exhaust into the intake. With power and vacuum, the valve closes.
