In another thread about sled tins and their importance in engine cooling the topic of "j tube" tin was brought up. I started this thread to make it easier to find when searching.

In order to direct the spent cooling air out the back of the car the sled tin and heater boxes must be in place. If the heater boxes are removed the spent air goes out the sides of the tin instead of to the rear of the car. Type 181 (thing/safari) with gas heaters and industrial engines did not have heater boxes but still needed to direct the air away from the engine. VW used these small tins to box in the sled tin as the heater box once did.

Below is a pic of the tin and a drawing with dimensions so you can make your own.

These tins were factory installed on 1500 engines and 1600 engines in a Type 181/Thing without heater boxes and on all Type 126 industrial engines.

What secures the outside edge of the tin? It looks like it could create an irritating rattle/buzz.

Nothing..... I twisted the sleds so they apply some pressure to the shields and are held tightly against the heads.

They do not rattle.

Glenn, have you tested temps with and without these tins? First time I have ever heard of these. I am running j-tubes on my bus but right now its winter so I'm not concerned with overheating but when summer comes and I move out west, I'll be driving in heat and will be concerned.

I hear alot about Jtubes and I am not sure what people are talking about, as I am have not owned aircools very long. I have a 64 with heater boxes and I a have a 71 without. It has aftermarket exhaust and have simaler tubes as the pic below, but tucked up closer to the head. Are the J tubes the tubes that connect to the exhaust and are running alongside the head?

Thanks for the speedy reply, those are in place, now I just need to put the pieces of tin on the sled and box it in to make it complete.

Howard Washington reported a 10ºF oil temp drop by installing a sheet metal shield between the J tube and the pushrod tubes.

Ive noticed that there is no more burnt oil in the tubes when running the industrial tins, evidence that it was heating the oil when going back into the case from the heads

I'm glad I ran across this. I installed j tubes a couple of weeks ago and hadn't heard of these sleds until now. Stupid question.....engine doesn't have to be out to install right?

sleds are used even with factory heater boxes. they are what protect your push rod tubes. and it would be easier to install with the motor out since they bolt to the backside of the cylinder head tin. the tin that this thread is about is something different than just a sled and can be installed without removing the motor.

Just as a note, next to Glenn´s Berg header, I just found out thtat CSP Python fits with original 1600 engine sled tins and industrial tins too!
