Pound the original in and then put another in, it will fit.

This auto. trans. thread is in the stickies as "Good Hints..." so I thought I would add on to it...

When I buy a vehicle I always like to crawl around underneath it to see what is where and whether it looks bashed up, leaking, etc.

Here is a pic of my 1986 auto. trans. from underneath with some sort of bulge on it:

1. what is the arrow pointing to?

2. Is that big round gray thing some sort of diaphragm?

Another old thread, but in case anyone ends up here.
The red arrow in the photo is pointing to the trans ATF "cooler" which has a dual circuit with engine coolant on one side and ATF on the other.
This part is known problem area as they will eventually leak internally mixing the two fluids and causing expensive damage to both the trans and the cooling system.
Most Vanagon owners with auto trans replace the stock unit with one of the aftermarket designs from Van Cafe or Gowesty and others.
The round thing is a cover over the actuator piston for the 2nd gear brake band. Along with some other bits, it makes the trans shift in and out of 2nd gear.
