once again . . . . . . Why??
else than for the heck of it,
and it might be cool
and to take up large amounts of space
and for super cooling
unless you use two engines, one in front and one in back. a great four wheel drive system!
If anybody asks how you can get 120 hp out of a stock vw 1600, just tell them get two! :D |

I am looking for one because I am going to install air conditioning into our 71 superbeetle and will use the extra location for the compresser and a serpentine belt. |

| Some years ago I remember seeing someone fab up 2 mini 36hp shrouds in a magazine. One shroud, generator, cooling fan per side of the engine. I thought it was cool to see the end result of someone spending hours engineer a one off deal. I dont know how effecient it cooled the engine. |

| I saw a bug with two alternators at a show in Puerto Rico. He had a big ass sound system and needed both alternators to charge the multiple batteries mounted in the vehicle. |

How about space to get a supercharger into?
First pic is not my engine, and I could not get any info about it.
Here is my project which is on hold at the moment due to time and wife constraints.

conversions like this were really popular around here in the 70s and 80s especially with 36hp engines that couldnt fit 12 volt gennys but even on alot of 60s 6volt engines that people were too lazy to convert properly
some of them make oil filling a nightmare, and the ones that dont normally have ugly decklid bulges and boxes |

| Well taking into account that people like to keep the V-belt arrangement on high HP motors because the amount of belt slippage they let occur, and then looking at the belt wrap (lack of) on that arrangement, I'm honestly surprised that thing cools at all. |

It dosent work good and is not recomended.
However it is done this way guite often overseas where a Japanese or Chinese alternator is a quarter the cost of a replacement VW generator. |

If I add a second alternator to my motor (which may happen), I'll run it to the left, over the distributor. If you run a pertronix type deal, you shouldn't really ever have to get in the distributor quickly, and it gives you better belt wrap.
I saw a bay window bus at Winter Jam that had a very cool setup. He had an A/C compressor over the distributor, then another bracket to the left of that with another alternator. He ran a double groove pulley on the A/C so the second alt had its own belt. Great belt wrap on that setup, but he had the room for it. |

i agree, locally to me (asia) alot do this..
when sum1 is too cheap to buy a vw alt when their alt gets busted
IMO looks like a Pile of crap
to my eye.. it slashes the value of a decent german metal
yet owners and sellers still try to sell their so called nice bugs for a hefty price
(couldnt even bother gettin the right alt)
ahahaha hope this doesnt become the next "look" trend
gosh |
