Great thread. Where are you in the process now?

I just bought a '69 Bug for $500. It kind of runs. Needs a new battery, brakes are shot, and the engine is a bit rough. Body exterior is fair, but has dents around it. I mostly got it to have a project with my kids.

My first car was a '69 bug back in '87. It had a tricked out engine, but looked like a normal Bug except for the straight pipe. It was awesome.

I haven't been very mechanically inclined for a long time. I have seen a few books on Amazon about restoring Bugs. Any suggestions on what book/guides to follow? I want the body to be pretty standard, but want to really make the car perform. It already has dual carbs, but I am sure they need to be rebuilt.

Any tips are appreciated.

Previous owner put a hitch on the factory rear bumper. He must have tried pulling something and the bumper rotated on the bracket driving the bottom of the bumper into the rear fenders. This caused about a 6 inch dent along both rear fenders. I popped them out with a rubber mallet and a piece of 2x4. Can't really tell cause car needs to be washed :D (did not take a before pic)

Someone got some whiteout on your license plate. I fixed it for you.

You're welcome.
:D

Been busy with job and bought new car 2010 VW Golf TDI :D so been lazy and not been working on this car lateley. But as for books I have the bentley VW repair manual and "How to keep your volkswagon alive for the complete idiot" both have been helpful in working on my beetle.

But yeah hoping to get back into working on the bug when it gets a tad warmer

I'm working on a $400.00 72 Bug, how's your coming along?

69BugCody Thu Jan 20, 2011 5:19 pm

i wish i could say it is coming along but with me on shift work and my lack of motivation, it is not :( In a few months I shall get cracking again on it.

Work does get in the way of our projects and we probably all go through the ups and downs of motivation. The forums keep me pumped and just going to the garage for a even a few minutes can get me started again. Good luck and keep us posted.

funny, I just did a project almost exactly like this. My grandfather owned an airplane with a good friend of his and they used to store an old '69 vw in the hangar with the plane so they could get to/from the airport. I now own the airplane a 1961 Piper Colt....and the vw. The vw had been sitting in the hangar since 1986...untouched in all original condition with a roof rack, sunrack.

I trailered the vw home and went through it from bumper to bumper. replace the gas tank, rebuild the carb, replaced the fuel pump, plugs & wires, points, condensor, battery, brake lines all the way around, rebuild the brakes completely, wheel bearings seals, oil, oil screen, etc. She runs great...even with 94,000 miles on the odometer.

I've always dreamed of owning a plane.

Wow westyman and sixfootdan you got some nice 69s!!!

Sorry, not been updating the thread, but got back into the swing of things. End of last year I scored some low back seats and boy do they make the interior seem much more spacious. Figured I would give a quick update with some pics to show this project is going forward once again. Got it running this last month thanks to a local VW genie and have been driving this beast all over town and having a blast. Future plans as of now are get this detailed (cleaned inside and out) probably a buff job to remove the oxidation. Then I am thinking a 4" beam and drop spindles. Maybe 5" still contemplating it.

But here she sits as we speak. Enjoy.

I love it!!!

I had to pay double that for my '69 Bug, but she cleaned up ok.

Wow, that is one sweet looking beetle. I would gladly have payed double if mine would have looked as clean as yours. My paint may somewhat buff out but it is pretty bad and all rubber window and trunk seals are shot, hence sweet summer ride lol. Let's hope for little rain :-)

Mine's not quite as good as it looks- whoever restored it had no idea what they were doing, and the previous mechanic also had no idea what he was doing, although he claims to be a professional!

Luckily, she's solid and drives beautifully, so I can deal with the imperfections :)

Good thread, I also have a 69 as well. It's a great car and runs well but am planning on a new engine
