I have a 3 prong harness on my alternator. From what I see on the Bosch alternator it has a single wire prong. How do I covert or what alternator do I need part # or something. Any help would be great!! |

3 prong is the "older" alternator with an external voltage regulator (which is typically found under the back seat on the driver's side). The single-prong alt is the newer one with an internal regulator.
Tips for wiring the new one up can be found here:

This diagram from Speedy Jim's site will help. It shows the old external voltage regulator and its wires in the bottom left. The #61 blue wire from the GEN lamp needs to be extended to reach the D+ terminal on the alternator. Most will re-use one of the wires from the VR harness. Since red and brown wires have a very specific meaning in VW wiring, many will chose to connect the blue wire to the old green DF wire and then connect the other end of the green wire to the D+ terminal at the alternator.
But you could run ANY colored wire you want. |
