Hi all -
Here is a question for you: I need to purchase an oil filter to fit my Maxi 2 pump. We have Autozone, Napa, Carquest and the like around here (NAPA is the closest). When I go to buy a replacement what do I tell them I want? It's not like I can say 'an oil filter for a 71 Super Beetle'. And I can't say 'an oil filter for CB's Maxi 2 pump'. Is there a year/car combo I can ask for and get the right thing?? |

| I believe it's designed for a standard "056" VW watercooled filter. Telling them you've got a 90's 2.0 Jetta. |

You can use that Mahle OC47 Rabbit/Golf size filter if you'd like. In the past, I know that CB has sold them with Mahle OC25 filters though, which is shorter than the VW one, (it's actually a BMW filter, for 318i,320i and the older 1600 and 2002 ). OC84 is also one that works that is that size. I've kept using those smaller size ones myself. If you want an application chart for that OC25 size, there's one on this listing on eBay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370353516446&
Here is a photo I took several years ago comparing an OC25 and the taller OC47.

My CB Maxi2 pump/filter is over 30 years old. I use Fram PH43 filter, for all those years. Auto store can cross-reference from that.
Above is a mistake, I typed that in the middle of the night (PH43 is what my Frontier takes with its remote oil filter, sorry). My VW with CB Maxi2 pump/filter uses Fram PH16, I just went outside and checked, use Fram PH16 filter. Auto store can cross-reference from that. |

| Thanks for all the help everyone! I need the shorter version in order to clear the lines for the heat exchangers. I'm off to the parts store! |

| I've never heard why CB chooses to use the smaller BMW filter with their pump, but I've kept with it, it's not as close to the number 3 heater box. FYI - Fram's equivalent to that one is PH3816, by the way. Although I stick with Mahle filters myself. |

| Whatever filter one uses, make sure it has an internal oil pressure relief valve. Blew a couple of cheapie FRAM filters, went to a WIX filter with relief valve and have had no problems for over ten years. |

x2, IMO the WIX are infinitely better than the fram. Cut open a WIX or a Napa Gold, and see its solid internal construction. Now cut open the Fram and notice how the entire inside of the filter, including the barrier between the "clean" and "dirty" oil, is made of flimsy cardboard. I used Fram at first on my Porsche 911, and just as you experienced, I kept blowing them up. They simply collapse internally, due to oil pressure.
I use only Mahle and occasionally a Napa Gold (there's a Napa store near by) at this point in time and am very happy with both of these. |

WIX does. |
