View original topic: Who needs reverse lights anyway.....I do, I do!

I have power to the reverse switch on my 73 Super. No lights. No power out of the switch while in reverse. If I take the switch out, it works when I manually push the button. I have tried several switches to no avail. I have tried to move my shifter hoping it was a short throw problem. Next it will be to put the stock shifter back in and see if that helps. I have not looked at the shift link to see if it is worn.

Any ideas? Has anyone had this problem.

I am going to be pulling the engine to replace it soon and I will pull the trans also and clean and paint it and install new mounts.

Check the associated fuse in the engine compartment. Is it blown, Yes No.
Do you have 12 v to the fuse Yes No.

There are two switches on a '73 transmission... make sure you have the right switch. One has something to do with emissions and is on the left side, and the other one is reverse, on the right side towards the nose cone.

How are you checking power? Voltmeter?

Power into switch on passenger side of transmission. 12 volts. If I take out the switch then push the switch in by hand it works. I have tried it with several switches and it works out of the vehicle every time. It seems as if something in the transmission is broken or it is not pushing far enough for it to activate the switch. Is this something that is an easy fix when I take out the trans or is it going to be a big task. I guess I have to take the nose cone off the trans and take a look. Unless someone has another option.

It sounds like there may be an issue with the reverse gear selector fork not being able to reach the switch either through excessive wear or being broken/damaged.

the second one is a neutral position switch, nothing to do with emissions just part of the safety interlock.
it sets the buzzer and warning light off if you put the car in gear without the seat belt buckled.

Thought it was the switch for the canister purge solenoid.. Oops

Wondered why it had continuity OUT of gear...
