I just came back this past weekend from Anza-Borrego Desert
I dreamed that my westy was a syncro and got stuck on some trails, end up braking my rusty muffler and in need of a new one

Excellent information. Looks like a $$$$ saver too. Terry K speaks quite highly of the Walker Mufflers and it being an option to the Ansa and Bosal's.

I wasent able to find one for the earlier 1980's Vanagons, for that price it would be nice to have a spare in the "parts bin".

I installed a Vanagon (2.1) Quiet Flow on my swap. It is quiet especially considering exhaust system is short. Rebate was pretty prompt. JSYK, mine cracked at inlet. But. I assume this was due to engine vibrations with older version of my hanger design.

That price is great. Up here, muffler much more.

Edit** Is it a round or square muffler you are referring too? That is a great price!

I see a lot of people retrofit other mufflers on vans and they don't have the same clearance as the stock muffler. They hang down a lot more below the carrier bar. The stock mufflers fit up tight and provide more clearance. I got this van and someone had put an aftermarket muffler on and it didn't fit right at all. Better to buy the right part for the application in this case.

This looks like the right one. The picture on Amazon isn't right.

FYI: Your washers need to fit better at the cat too. Grind an edge flat.

Thanks for the FYI. I'll double check. Fasteners were changed after I welded crack but for sure. Cat factory weld bead is close to washer if that's what you mean.

For sure. Factory straps. Maybe eh? On my setup, didn't use Walker PN 35920. Are these in place of factory straps? (somehow bolt to muffler?). Clearly I know little - nothing of the 2.1 ;) On my swap, first version of hangers were just wrong. Now using 3 Bosal DV isolators on home made brackets.

Now back to your regular programming..... ;)

I'm almost sure it's a round muffler and the picture on Amazon is just a generic pictures
I read somewhere in this forum that is a perfect fit and replacement.
Will post pictures Monday or Tuesday when I get the muffler delivered

When it quits raining out, I will try to take some pictures of the hanger system I built for my 83 1/2. Its been on there quite a while now without cracking. I pretty much designed it to allow for heat expansion so I don't think either the pipes or mounts are as likely to crack as with the original set up.

You can't really see things all that well in this picture, But the links that support the muffler are designed to pivot on either end a bit, the bolts were left slightly loose and then double nutted to allow them some movement. Hidden behind the mustache bar is another almost vertical link that stabilizes the rear end of the two links connecting to the bottom of the sump. For the link that you see disappearing upward there is a 90° bracket at the top which allows the link to swing forward and back. Sorry, I know my description doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you can't see all the part.

On the left side on the engine I have a single support as vertical as I could figure out how to mount it. It too is set of so its ends are free to move a little.

The original mounts that supported the muffler when I bought the rig managed to break every 5-10K miles. Once I redid them I have gone 50-60K without failure.

A question about the brackets. Do the stock mounts fit this muffler or is a after market set/home made version the way out.

The Walker mufflers are a little bit smaller in diameter then the stock VW muffler
The upper saddles will accept them with no problem, but this leaves a big gap between the muffler and the lower strap.

I've had the answer for tis problem, and have had the solution for at least 10 years.

I've been manufacturing heavy duty straps that are a little bit shorter than will fit to any muffler & hanger anyone has to offer for the vanagon.

The secret is only in the strap bolt length.

That's it---
And any after market muffler will fit into the stock Vanagon upper saddle with my heavy duty muffler strap.

Problem solved, All Done.

If you go to the manufacturers website, you will actually see part numbers and sketches. They are round like the originals.

Looks as if Walker doesen't manufacture a muffler for an 82 air-cooled Westy. Would it be wise/ not so wise to use the #22392 they show in the picture?

It appears to be the same configuration as the air-cooled mufflers are...a flange on one end and just a small straight pipe on the other.

Besides the world reversing its rotation....whats the downside on installing a muffler thats not designed for a particular vehicle.

Is that what is needed to keep the muffler from cracking?
