View original topic: Linkage Shift Ball Issues

1984 Vanagon. Shifting was a bit rough but serviceable, so decided to change out shift linkage ball at transmission. Cheaped out and got the jp group dansk brand available at autohausaz. Spent 40 minutes trying to fit it prior to realizing the dang splines were not etched all the way on end that goes towards transmission. No problem, I was able to remove the ball and put it onto my assuming original metal ball housing piece after cutting / grinding the original rubber ball off.

Should have thought to compare balls a little closer prior to destroying original. Now can’t get linkage back together pretty sure the ball is too large for the “cup”. Tried to drop rear bushing bracket but shift rod just ended up bound up after i wrestled mount screws back in.

Anyone else experience similar issues in past or for some reason know what the appropriate diameter of the linkage ball might be?

Thanks in advance.

Mine is apart - 1985. Shift ball measures 29mm.

Hope that helps!

Awesome thanks for quick reply! Measured a couple times with digital calipers and i am getting over 30mm.. the spline issue I encountered certainty didn’t instill confidence that the fit would be any different.

Looks like the replacement ones are plastic? I would just take sandpaper to it as evenly as you can and keep testing the fit.
