View original topic: Stuttering, jerky clutch ?

When in reverse or down shifting the clutch in my '73 Thing stutters and jerks the whole car. What would cause this? I haven't removed the engine yet to look, but will.
Thanks, Chuck

Maybe you need to have your flywheel ground. Should be easy for most machine shops, but VW flywheels are steel, requiring a different stone, and they have a huge step that needs to be correct, so a neighbor with a flywheel grinder might not be able to do it.

I forgot to add. When taking off in first and any up shifting it doesn't jerk.
Thanks, Chuck

change your motor mounts.

Also have a look at the Bowden tube to see if it has the flex you want to see in there.

I argee with all of the above plus and it happened to me.

THE tube that runs through the tunnel it is welded in a few spots to the tunnel. If a weld broke, as I have seen it will have the seme effect.

I forgot to tell you to check that out you have to cut a hole on the passengers side of the tunnel to grab the tube and see if it moves. Of course you will only do it if it gets worse and nothing else helps.

Mine got real dangerous, I would go pull out of parking lot, and see a break in traffic, hit the gas and it would shutter and stall on the double line. Perfect for a broad side hit.
