So I decided to have the automatic trans in my 84 westy rebuilt this winter. It just finally started slipping and not shifting from 2nd. to 3rd. It has a suby 2.5L that I have been running for 3 years. While it was in the shop, I decided to change the ring and pinion (along with the bearings) to a better fitted size with the engine. I purchased a used 3.73 from German Transaxle. Now I have a whine that is the loudest when I let off the gas. I have only put 200 miles on the new set up. I would take it back to the shop but this is what happened. First they gave me a price of $1800 to rebuild the tranny. They said they would put the R&P in for me as long as they were in there. When I went to pick up my van, they said it came to $3000.00. They said they ran into some issues and had to replace some bearings on the R&P. After some discussing, we agreed on $2500.00. The van banged loudly when I put it in gear. It also had the whine. I took it back. Then they told me again that it needed new bearings for the R&P and they can't locate them. After another long discussion about how they lied to me, I agreed to purchase the bearings from German Trans, overnight ship them to them, and they would put them in. I picked the van up and two days later, it wouldn't move. I had the van towed back to the shop. They told me it was a messed up shift rod that was damaged when they first looked at the van. They fixed it, I had to pay half the tow fee. It's been shifting fine, the new ratio is nice, but the whine is still there. It sounds like a bearing whine to me or perhaps the R&P was not set up correctly. At this point I am not sure what to do.
1) find someone else to try to set up the R&P(expensive and hard to find)
2) Just have the old one put back in and get some bigger tires. (sell the one I just bought)
3) Just drive it and see what happens. Maybe it will set in?
What do you guys think? |
