So I made the mistake to start a thread about power plants. HA thats like a gaping wound around here. I couldnt help but notice one of the comments that nothing new is really ever discussed. Really all new threads are just old threads revisited. SO...then i was thinking...I bet no one has put lambo doors on a vanagon (see here if your old like me http://www.exoticlambodoors.com/) or air bags or any of that junk? Am I wrong? I think it might be cool to see a vanagon with some air bags on it. Imagine the side door instead of rolling back it rolls up on to the roof. Im not saying I would spend the money to do it  However, I wouldnt mind looking at it.

That would be really nifty! Especially if the slider swung out like the rear hatch.........Instant Awning.

If only I had time. Someday.. It would need at least 400 hp. Midengine and stretch the wheel base so the big FAT slicks are right at the rear bumper. And of course dual tail pipe stacks out the rear upper vents. I love bench racing. Thankfully dreaming about is good enough for me. I will build it in trade for paying off a chunk of my debt. Any takers?

try using the search on this forum for "air bags" or "slammagon"

or "vanagon s" or tristar eric or "race taxi" (ggogle that) . or finnish race taxi, or look for the swedish tristar dealer site, and look for their Tristar restoration build.

or "Hockenheim t3 treffen" on youtube.

Thor,

If you are going to give crystalcabot a hard time, you need to post some pictures to prove it, man!

The slider awning idea is actually pretty damn cool, IMO.

Why go through all the trouble? Mess up a van the easy way-

Air ride tristar:

mid engine twin turbo v8 1100hp at the rear wheels:

Then there is a lowrider one too:

Can't find the lambo door and lifting side door right now, but it's a start.

Oh and in case anyone wondered, semi has been done too:

Pretty cool if you ask me

I like the gullwing side door idea too, but how about making it with a peripheral frame for the gull wing assembly, and make a pair of barn doors to mount to the frame, so that it can either open like barn doors or swing up as awning...
I bet that hasn't been done yet.

A door that can be used as an awning. Nice idea. But imagine in a parking lot at 90 degrees.... it takes lot of room.

Yeah, that's why I want the barn door option on the gullwing frame. You could open the back (suicide) door to get right into the back seat, or open the front one when the bed is folded down to get in and out easily.

So, uh.... how do you get in?

I can just imagine someone doing all that work, opening it up for the first time and.... DOH!

Yeah, that lambo thing is PS. That site had a buttload of cars with that door concept, most of them looked shopped. Plus you'd slam your knee of the thing every time you climb in.

Why not make the frame run on the slider, and the insert flip up?

j_dirge Thu Apr 22, 2010 8:59 am

Has anyone modified the Vanagon sliding door to run on something similar to what is used in modern Minivans?..

Door "automatically" slides open/closes and latches on a push o' the button?.. nice and quiet like?

Thats a mod I'd like if it were feasible...
