View original topic: How to remove old wax off a surfboard......

I'm going to a charity car show tomorrow with my '60 sunroof bus, and a friend offered a surfboard to put in it for a display. We can have it sticking out the roof. Sounds like fun, but his board has (years) old wax on it with dirt mixed in. What's the best way to clean this guy up so I can take it in my car and have some fun.

Four step method that I use, works really well. Take a hair dryer and heat up the wax so that the majority rolls off of the board. A thin film will remain, to clean that completely off use paint thinner and a paper towel or rag. Remove the fumes with dishwashing soap and if you want it to shine use carnuba wax and polish that baby up! Remember to place a large cardboard box on the floor or do it on the lawn because removing wax from the floor can be a pain.

I just leave mine out in the sun for a few minutes then scrape with a bondo spreader or plastic putty knife. Any residual can be wiped off with a paper towel.

That's not old wax, that is surfer patina!

Seriously, I always just left the board out in the sun and used some mineral spirits for tough patches.

I just use a wax comb. They cost like 50 cents at the surf shop. :D

i leave it in the sun for a bit. then use a wax comb. then i'll rub some flour into it to get the film off.

Thanks for the help everyone! I'm now ready for the next show......I have a clean board, a beachball, a parasol, and some chairs and an ice chest which will have the right stuff in it 8) . Now if only Annette and Frankie were there.

Just leave it in your car, works better if the car is black. The wax will run right off the board straight onto your interior.
