that sure looks like a bent spindle to me... I'd think if you bent the wheel itself like that, the welds would have popped...
your baja has come out real nice, I like the orange, which orange is that??
I know for sure the wheel was bent and i'm hoping the wheel was all that was bent. We had to bend it back to get the baja home. The orange is a GM color called sunburst orange. It was made by PPG.
Thanks yall for the compliments. |

A few poser pics from Disney, Ok 8-14-10.
Here's Travis's Baja. This is the second time we have had it out since gettin it ready. It did pretty good.
The event was "Wheelin for the wounded". It was to raise money for wounded Veterans that depend on non-profit organizations for help. We painted the car red white and blue and had all the vet's that showed up sign the trunk lid.

I forgot to mention that I broke a ball joint while hittin some trails in the woods. Don't know why though? I have limit straps keeping it 1/2" from full drop. It pulled the joint right out of the socket. Fortunately, I had spare control arms on hand. Took Travis and I 17 minutes to swap it out.
Any idea's on why it broke out? |

How old was it? Was the boot split at all? |

I've been told they are old Jackman wheels, but I haven't confirmed that. Next time I have them off, I am going to look closely for some markings. They were on the car when I bought it. |

I put all new ball joints in last fall. I've only been wheelin about 6 or 7 times. The boot was split. |

It's not often you find someone who knows how old their broken ball joint it. Once the boot splits, it fills with dirt and sand and wears in no time. Add a little off-roading fun and they go pop.
Once I get a little in and out movement out of mine then I replace them. Not worth the headache.
Jackman wheels will have a "J" on one of the spokes.

After busting a ball joint last time I went out and not having a jack, I got me a 48" farm jack. I mounted it to the rear bumper. Gotta be prepared.

maybe make a small version of a spare tire wing nut that you could put a pipe on the wing to turn it off and tighten. add a spring or sponging piece of rubber under the jack so when you tighten it then the spring would apply pressure and just add a clip encase the nut backs off.

Thats a good idea. I could weld some steel to the nuts to make it like the large wingnut in your pic, but not so big. Then drill holes in the steel that I could tie together with a cable so they can't back off. I have some extra rubber pads that go between the front beam and the body that would be perfect. |

So, today I bought a used Weber progressive 26/27 with intake. I put in on and drove a few miles to check it out. It definitely has more juice than the 34 pict solex. Hopefully it will hold up better on the trails too.
Now I need to figure out what I want to do for the air cleaner. I like the one I have, but it doesn't fit the progressive as it has an odd shape. I am considering using the adapter in the link. I could either use it to attach my old filter, or I might plumb my air inlet into the cab. I'm wondering if this adapter restricts air flow? Any input?

Does anyone have they're air inlet plumbed into the cab? If so, some pics would be nice. I'm curious how loud it might be. |

Makin some progress. Travis and I modified my trailer to hold 2 baja's.
Should be safe after I tied em down all around.
We also fabricated mounts for my new winch. We welded the mounting plate to a reciever so that it doesn't stay mounted when not in use.
storage mount
We also put a different steering box on as I couldn't get the play to go away. I also put an Weber progressive to 2 stage air cleaner adapter on so I could keep my good filter. I'll post pics later. |

Went wheelin this weekend and broke another lower ball joint. It was the other side this time. This is getting old quick. I have limit straps on the front, but the joint pulled right out of the pocket. Before I started wheelin, I replaced all of the ball joints. Could it be that maybe I didn't clock them in the right direction? Maybe my limit straps need tightened due to stretch or poor attachments? Does anyone make a ball joint that is supposed to be stronger than stock? |

Interesting that your breaking balljoints so frequently, I am yet to have any problems with mine, and I like to think I beat it pretty hard. I realize this post is old so you may have solved the problem by now, but maybe tightening the straps like you said would help
