The carb I had on my rail was waaay too big and wouldn't lean out enough, even with smaller jets, so I had to pick up a new carb.
Found a Euromax 34PICT cheap on C-List and picked it up. Now, everything I'm reading says not to use a Bosch 009 with it because it doesn't have vacuum advance. It will be too hesitant off the start.
Anyone else run this combo? I haven't put on the new intake/carb yet. Should I just wait until I can get a dist. with vacuum advance? I would hate to have to buy another distributor, since I just bought this one and I bet it doesn't have 20 miles on it. My engine is a 67' 1500 H-block.
Thanks. |

I have read drilling a small hole in the throttle plate will help with the flat spot on that carb when using the 009. I have not tryed this so I don't know how effective it is. Im sure others will chime in. |

I've got a 33-pic3 and an 009. - 1600dp with tee-pee exhaust. I'm running it with the throttle plate hole soldered closed (which is what I read) and one size up main jet and it has a pretty bad hesitation but runs great past that. I had a 3rd size up main jet in it and it had great bottom end and response but was too rich when it was completely "on the main jet" and loaded up over 3000-3500rpms. As far as I can tell, the best solution is to use a vac. advance distributor or a larger carburetor. They just don't play well together. |

Actually you can plug the throttle plate hole but I find if you just change the idle jet and the main jet up a 1/2 size or a full size it works just fine with the 009 dist.
You have to change the idle jet usually to get rid of the flat spot as the idle jet supplied fuel to the progression ports as well as the idle cirquit. The main jet starts to come in at around 2500 RPM or so.

ah, didn't think (or read) about the idle jet... what size is stock ? I don't even remember what I bought for the main jet... it was back sometime around October. I would have to check my receipt. Whatever it was, it ran excellent when it was past the hesitation. |

Well I got it all installed, set a base line of 2 1/2 turns for both adjustments and it fired right up. The only problem was, when I checked the timing, it was almost 40 degrees BTDC.
Trying to get it down to 7.5 at idle is proving to be tedious and impossible for me. Valves are good at .006, points are good and at .016. Still getting massive backfires and not even close to idling.
Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated, because if I had hair, I would be pulling it out. Keep in mind I have no idea what size the jets are in it, I imagine stock but, I don't even know that.
My engine is an H0 block, 1500 with dual port heads, 12v and a 009 dist.
Please Help! |

Found the articles on Chirco. Gonna try their recommended adjustments once my shift is over in the morning and see what happens.. |

I don't like the 34P*** carbs ...
but in your case,, it also sounds like you have an air leak maybe from mounting your new intake and carb. (No idle and backfiring) ...
You might want to check that out real close...
A long time ago we used to run two gaskets under those carbs plus some gasket sealer to ensure they seated airtight to the intake..
Also,, and I might be too old to remember correctly,, but I think if changing idle jets, that the number sizes work backward to main jets....
Since the idle jet monitors air bleed, I think the smaller the number of the jet, the richer the idle mixture...... You might check that out if you start changing idle jets.
I also have heard of some who would remove one spring from the advance on the 009 to help fight the flat spot ...
I never tried that one, just gave up and used vacuum...

The new 009 distributors only have one spring.
Some people are adding a spring to them. But which spring to you use. Most stock VW distributors with mechanical advance in them, have 2 springs, one kinda heavy, and a lighter one. |

Turns out I had 2 bad plug wires. They were bought about 6 months ago, so I never suspected them. Going to pick up new plugs and wires tomorrow morning and hope I can get this thing dialed in and ready for the road this weekend!
Thanks for everyones input! |
