View original topic: 1970 Bay Window won't start

I have a 70 bay that gets started about once/2 weeks...this week, I could not get the engine to turn over. I have had issues in the past getting it to start, however I followed Muir's directions (hammer and screwdriver trick) to get the starter whirling, and usually this gets it going.(after tapping on the solenoid a bit with a hammer)...I figured this would be a temp. fix...and my luck may have just ran out...anyway...I am still trying to diagnose the problem...but need some help. When I turn the key, the red lights come on (by the way...I charged the battery to full charge just to eliminate that possibility) and I hear the starter (or solenoid??) turning, but it just does not turn the engine over...It may get real close, but just does not do it...after awhile, the noise gets deeper and slower, and eventually just sounds like a dying/growling bus, at which point, if I try again, nothing happens...until the next day, I can go through the whole process again..it seems as if it gets tired and needs to rest. I have crawled under the bus with the screwdriver and can get the starter to turn without an issue...when I connect from the batter terminal to the 'small switch' (ignition) I get the same result as with turning the key...does this sound the the ignition switch, solenoid, both? or something else...anyway to just get it started....bypassing the ignition switch...thanks...hope this is somewhat clear.

Sounds like the frequently common wire, cable, and connection problems.

Can you be a bit more specific? Are you talking about the grounding cable, starter wire...thanks.

Hey roots,
Like DBM said this is a common problem and we help people like you get through it almost weekly. Here are some things to look at:

1) The electrical side of the ignition switch could be bad (they commonly are) and is usually one of the last things people try. Replacing the switch isn't too hard and we can walk you through the process as well as which one to buy (and not to buy = Chinese crap).

2) Check all the grounds and connections from the battery terminals and battery cable clamps if you have the type that bolts onto the wire. The inside gets corroded. Be sure to clean the ground connection from the battery to the frame near the battery. There is another very important ground wire that frequently gets missed and that lives under the bus at the transmission nose. It grounds the engine (starter) to the frame. Be sure to remove the ends and clean them with a brush.

3) You might just need to install a rebuilt starter. I've found cheap ones through Napa for $65. Clean all the wire terminals at the starter with a wire brush.

4) Your starter might be fine but the bushing is bad in the transmission. This bushing supports the rotating part of the starter and wears out over time. When they wear out the starter grounds out internally causing problems. Replacing this bushing can be tricky so ask for advice on that.

5) Your battery could be on the verge of failing. Best to take it to Autozone or another FLAPS and have it load tested. Batteries can take a charge and show full power but when you put a load on them they fall on their faces. Check your battery water level too.

A lot of buses have hot start relays installed by owners. My belief is that if all of the above are in good condition then you don't need the hot start relay. I've never had one on any of my VW's. Good luck and I hope this helps.
