1958 & 1959 interior seats and doors from the gallery, by color, for reference. Most are OG; a few fairly faithful reproductions (from WCCR, maybe) are included. There's a 58 ragtop in the blue section that's probably someone else's work that looks very nice.

I believed to have had a beige headliner since i got my 58 in 2003, but I've got a little bit sceptical when the L41-Chart stated that there should be a grey headliner in a black 58 and not a beige one.

So, I gave the remains of my og headliner a scrutinised inspection. And voilà, I found that it used to be a grey fabric indeed!

Looks beige on the first view, but ....

after a little washing: Grey, indeed!

Obviously, decades of smoking gave my headliner this 'healthy' beige hue. yack. Kids, don't start to smoke. :wink:

And this is why:
Back in those times, people in Germany oftentimes added aftermarket seat covers over their seats immediately after they purchased their car in order to keep resale-value as high as possible. (although, they could enjoy their new seats then....) This was done with mine as well, red seat covers and even sideboard-covers were added:

And, when they were worn through at some time, they just added another seat cover over the first one in my car... nice, fakey fur ones :-)

Underneath all those covers, there is everything in blue!

But i will definitely go with the red stuff again when I'll put my 58 back together. I think it looks nice.

Haven't deceided about headliner colour though.... :roll:

Heres the Interior in my original Black 59 semaphore ragtop.

Ive seen one other black car with blue interior. 24k original Km...

I havent taken the covers off the front seats yet. But the original material is there.

Heres the all original 58 euro.

Here's some stuff from my '59 garnet red. Very dirty. I wish the drivers door panel was useable, the rest seems to be fine with a little cleaning.

Side-by-side comparison of the Red / Green / Blue material samples for the door panels and seats. I've seen the door panel insert material referred to as both a "diamond" and "waffle" style pattern. Interesting how the grey was subtly tinted to coordinate with the primary color.

At first glance I thought the fabric was a houndstooth pattern, but with the considerably larger image above (click on it, it's huge) it's obviously not a houndstooth. The guy doing the body work (and teaching me to do it) on my '58 works at a restoration shop, and I talked to the owner last night and he said he could do the seat covers without hesitation and the price was pretty attractive given the quality I've seen coming out of there (mainly because it's such a simple interior). I've been looking through all of the major manufacturers for interior kits, and none of them have a fabric that's terribly close to what I need. Does anyone know where I can get some fabric that's at least close to OG? Specifically the P134 Brown-Grey.

I had the seat fabric custom woven to match the original by a woman in Canada with German thread.

for the vinyl die did you use the Ford "shadow blue" from eastwood? it looks too bright, the OG vw blue is closer to Navy blue than that... which shade of grey as well?

Yes, Shadow Blue I believe is correct. You can't go by the swatch you see on your monitor since all monitors are set differently the color will appear different on everyone's monitor and not quite accurate.

I bought different shades of blue and the gray to try to match it and Shadow Blue was not one I originally bought. I had to reorder more colors and found the Shadow Blue is a very dark navy blue. It was right on when I matched it to the color of the original vinyl color under the chrome strip. I think the gray was Warm Gray, but I'd have to go find a can of it to make sure.

Id love to know the gray you used for sure, the cool gray the have on eastwoods site looks closer to correct, but curious what you used, it looks gorgeous. Is that an actual dye or is it more of a "vinyl paint"? Your panels look gorgeous! Did you take of the piping or did you remove it and staple it back on?? Did you do your seats too? I'd love to see pics of your interior!

I will hunt around this weekend for the can. I removed the vinyl and the piping from the boards, repaired the broken clip holes in the boards with fiberglass resin, cleaned and dyed the vinyl then glued it back on. I scrubbed the piping with Bon Ami :) then stapled the piping back on. The staples are hard to find though, I found ones really close at www.mcmaster.com and a stapler there. The dye is sprayed on like paint, but it's really flexible and is like a dye more than a paint. If you buy all the prep stuff it really works well.

My seats were toast, I had my Euro fabric custom woven and then sewn by Lenny with the right color vinyl. Here is my back seat bottom, I haven't taken any more pics yet of the rest:

ive noticed Lenny does this thing on the seats about 4 inches forward on the seat bottom from the back rest the cover has a stitch down through the seat springs to pull a crease in the seat bottom. it looks like only cars with cloth topped original seat covers had this, and the leatherette topped seats did not. am i wrong on this? i have very nice og seat covers and there is no threads coming through the the covers. they were removed from the seats with the horsehair pads intact and there no thread there. hmmm... any one know this detail??

any update on the proper grey? i have a set of blue 58 door panels on their way to me and want to get busy dying the interior when they get here. im hot to trot!

That is my '58 beetle on the repro photos at the top of this page.
I have since found original rear panels.
Although my car didn't have it's original interior when I bought it, I went with the red/brown combination.
Occasionally dealers would swap interiors for there customers, so you may find a car with a interior that doesn't fit the color charts.
As a rule 90% of the black beetles came with the red/brown combination.
The headliners were gray, and the carpet a dark gray.
Gray rubber mats were offered for the first time in 1958.
Also if you have an original door panel, remove the chrome trim and you will see the gray color it was when new. There were no beige door panels in 1958-59
Finally the seat rails matched the color interior.

I ordered seat cover replacements and matching door panels that were correct reproductions for my 59 from either Wolfsburg West or westcoastmetric(I cant remember and I cant find that receipt, sorry). They made them to order which took about eight weeks, and besides the fade of the originals they match exactly. When I placed the order they called me to confirm textures so I sent them a photo so they could match.

So WW or WCM were able to do your seats with the square pattern cloth? It's this i cant find, I can get the rest of the material in the UK.

The other issue I have is that I am not using standard beetle seat in the front. I have fitted a pair of 912 seats with headrests. Thus i'd really like to get hold of the material, so I can have these trimmed.

I think they sub out the work to a shop that does the work custom so they may be able to make what you need. Hope this helps
