View original topic: back to a baywindow (again) aka my new bus
airkooledchris Mon Jun 21, 2010 10:18 am

as a previous owner of baywindow busses, id always hoped to stumble upon one again someday and it finally happened.

meet the new addition to my VW family:

It's a 1979 California model. stock engine and exhaust setup, which was good as it passed smog with flying colors (even the new stupid fuel test)

the PO was super super nice and when the deal was totally done and im walking out to the garage, he says 'hold on, I think I have some parts and accessories I don't need to keep anymore' and gives me:

rebuilt started
rebuilt alternator
rear bumper overriders
childs cot
westy tent
belts, valve cover gaskets, ball joints, fuel filters, TempSens2, original ashtray, clock delete plate and a bunch of odds and ends bolts and washers.

I felt good about the deal going in, but after getting the spare stuff, im just blown away. id always hoped id come across another bay someday and the right one finally fell in my lap.

spent the day yesterday unfolding the tent to see how bad of condition it was in (since it was free, id assumed the worst) - here's some pics:

Sweet score!, congratulations!

The tent hooks are supposed to loop around the pole and hook back into the grommet on the tent BTW

What is the "fuel test" you mention? BTW... nice Bus.

thanks.

The test is called the Low-Pressure Fuel Evaporation Test (“LPFET”)

What is the EVAP test for?
The EVAP system is designed to capture fuel vapors (hydrocarbons) from the vehicle. The LPFET is designed to detect leaks in the EVAP system. EVAP systems can degrade over time and allow smog forming hydrocarbon emissions to escape into the air, even when the engine is not running. Finding and repairing EVAP leaks will help clean our air by preventing the release of harmful fuel evaporative emissions from vehicles.

The LPFET will determine if the EVAP system is operating as it was designed by the manufacturer. The Smog Check technician will use an adaptor in place of the gas cap to connect the EVAP tester to the vehicle and temporarily seal a vapor line. The EVAP tester will then apply a small amount of pressure to test the system for leaks.

Which vehicles are being tested?
Most vehicles between the model year 1976 and 1995.

What if the vehicle fails the test?
Failing the LPFET will result in the vehicle failing its Smog Check. If a leak is detected, it will have to be repaired.

I copied the above details from a website that describes this better than I would have been able to...

I think he is referring to the one that tests the "tank seal" to make sure it will hold pressure and not vent hydrocarbons into the air. Frequently it is a cap thing.

PLEASE learn how to set that tent up properly so you don't damage it. Awesome Bus, and nice score on the extras also!

how else did I set it up incorrectly outside of the loop around the poles thingy that would cause damage?

thanks btw.

That's what I was referring to.....you'll hate yourself when one of those tabs rips out of the tent or the rubber ring holding the plastic hook on breaks off....or the hook itself. Otherwise looks pretty good!!

I'm jealous.
