me and a buddy cleaned up the bus some today......
heres the mornings shabby ass
we first cleaned the paint by hand, then a very short (30 minutes) clr treatment,we didnt get everything but certainly got an idea of how well the paint/primer still was
then it was rubbed down with linseed oil to preserve the finish and retard rust,i left the left dr alone because it will be disassembled and reworked,if theres any chance of the finish on the dr surviving it will need to be rubbed down after the work

No way! Another local barndoor?
Scott, you really need to spread the work when you get your hand on these and want to sell. Keep them local!

i had nothing directly to do with this bus. i do know the former owner but it's a small community. i know the person who transported it, and he met with me so i could collect one of thom fitzpatrick's split trailer hitches. we knew he would be passing through toronto and made the arrangements for him to mule me the hitch, which he was kind enough to do. if you've ever seen a proper split tow hitch you'll know why it made sense to mule it rather than ship it up here.
as far as keeping them local, i'm all for it. but for example, where were the locals when i sold the popcorn bus? (it was advertised on this site) i didn't get a single bit of serious interest on that bus locally, let alone an offer. talk is cheap - someone local has to pony up or shut up, that's the hard reality. |

| Can't wait to see the progress. Scott is a great guy, but also a businessman...can't fault him for not keeping it local - at least it's still in North America! |

Busting your chops Scott. I wasn't paying attention back in the popcorn bus days. No worries.
Didn't get a chance to grab you today at Bugfest. Showed up late. Maybe next time.

well i havent done much but collect some bits and pieces,i recently bought this crankstart handle, can anyone tell me if this is the correct nonbumper crankstart?
still need
-1 semaphore
-1 outer keyed dr handle
-a front emblem (yep its an imposter bd emblem thats installed now)
-a pre 53 hornbutton
-wheels,2 at the very least
-reflectors.................who knows exactly what is correct for 52??????????
-gas tank rubber boot (im assuming 52 has one right?) doh! i see in my pics that my tank already has a decent rubber boot |

I personally think the non-rear bumper handles are the shorter ones since they will not hit the bumper but I'm not sure anyone has ever "proved" that by stating their early Barndoor has the original crank handle and it's the short version.
I see the smooth horn buttons for sale fairly frequently if you keep an eye out. Usually in the Beetle parts section. |

thanks!
so does anyone have a nice enough pre rear bumper bus that the original handle is definately original?
this one and the one in the classifieds both have a longer stroke as well..........so do pre rear bumper buses have a longer stroke but a shorter snout?
i can only guess that if they did indeed have a longer stroke it would be because either they were taller than 55-59............or they had longer strokes but then dropped the longer stroke for shorter stroke
to anyone who has this info its much appreciated if you feel like sharing |
