Does anyone else have a problem with their accelerator pedal leaning over to the left and screwing up the linkage to the cable when pressing it down? I bend mine back, get it in line as much as possible, get as much play out of the pivot pin as possible . . .and it lasts about a week or less. Now I think the bracket welded to the floorboard is getting weak and giving a bit too. I am using the original return spring setup on the '65, a spring that goes over the accelerator cable and has a 'bell' hat on it held in place by a split clip. I used a rebuild kit for this from Wolfsburg West, but I am thinking the spring is too heavy for the application. When all is working well, it seems as though the pedal is hard to push. Perhaps this is causing it to give and bend. Any ideas where I can get a weaker (lighter) spring of this design?

Put a roller pedal on it and you will eliminate the problem all together. That is, if you are not a purist.

I am a bit of a purist, but only when it is feasable. I'd like to fix it, but if it continues to be a problem a roller will suffice. She's running to good now to fight a stupid pedal. So far the only non stock item on the entire car is a quick shift adapter. 8)

:-k Although, you could make it purer than pure. Maybe use the pedal assembly from an oval window Type 1 or just remove an original roller pedal from an oval assembly. It would work great even with an oval dealer option pedal attached to the assembly.

How Do u install a roller pedal. I have one but i couldn't figure out how it went on. I only spent a couple of min on it but anyway. All i have is the pedal itself. Is that all u need for install onto a 61?
Thanks |

OK, I had a roller years ago on my last '65. This may be a silly question, but is there a roller that is designed to sit behind a stock pedal? The roller would just roll along the back side of the pedal as it were pressed? Is this what an oval/pedal combo is? OR, is this how rollers were originally designed to work? I'd like to keep the pedal, but a roller up the back side seems much better than this stupid linkage that keeps screwing up.

I was able to locate a 'Double OG' roller today (as Loren put it) for my '65 . . .original unit with VW logo on it, I believe off of a '54. MAN . . what a dream the car is to drive now! ! ! ! The pedal is SO easy to push and none of that jerky crap I had from the original pedal and linkage junk. Alas, putting in the seat to test drive I find that the neighboor's kid rocked the seat back a few times while it was out and the weld broke on the right side on the bar that the seat back leans on . . so, driving in my 'almost' perfect '65 my seat leans badly to the right. . . . . it is always something ! ! ! ! Gotta get it welded tomorrow.

You have to remove the pedal assembly and push the pin out that the OE lever is hinged on. It pushes out towards the shift hump, so it will not come out without removing the pedal assembly. Kind of a pain, especially the clutch pedal and cable. Completely worth it though. You may also need some type of pivot bolt to attach your accelerator cable to the roller if you have a 'ring' end like mine.

I have a roller pedal in my 65 vert . I hated it so I bought an accelerator repair kit, drilled out the little arm, got a screw and nut to bolt it to the floor and it fits fine and rolls the roller pedal. |

Uggggh, bringing this post back - I've searched on all the posts about the accelerator pedal linkage in the front and I still can't figure out how to get mine right.
I'm on my 2nd repair kit, this one:
The problem is that the pedal keeps getting out of whack and it puts too much stress on the bar and the notches sticking out that keep the washers in place wear out and then the linkage fails and the pedal goes to the floor.
Is there any chance this would solve my problems:

I feel your pain! I went through this as well. I put the pedal cluster back in rebuilt, new hinge, rebuild kit and now we know why they call it a "cluster".
So after much trying, fiddling, breaking, trying again, lean, squish....I scrapped the stock setup.
I bent a 1/8" X 1/2" piece of aluminum (drilled at both ends) which is pivoted off a bolt and nyloc nut from the innermost accelerator pedal bracket hole. This then goes straight to the cluster pivot and the accelerator cable hook is bolted to these with a nyloc nut.
The bend is important and the length is important because the radius of swing is different on pedal and cluster pivot.
Blah Blah....I need to just pull the piece out and dimension it for you.
The pedal is smooth and positive now with no lean. |

Gerg,
Can you tell me what a quick shift adapter is and what it does? Thanks, it sounds cool. I've been thinking about going to a roller pedal acct uneven acceleration in first gear..

Sounds like either the pedal hinge or the floor portion of the hinge is tweaked. Straighten it, make sure the pedal swing is correct, then lightly lube it, and the stock pedal will work great.
I also made sure the pedal z-bar was crisp, the carb linkage was adjusted right, the cable slack under the car was right (as little as possible), and made sure the return spring assembly was in correct order. All this makes the throttle response so much better you don't feel you have to mash the pedal so much, which is what tweaks things in thirst place. |
