I'm planning to buy a set of Flat-4 Fuchs soon and wanted to paint detail them. My question is, can I paint the chrome version without having to strip the chrome off first? Would it be easier and more durable to just buy the polished versions and paint those? I've seen guys paint the chrome versions before but I wonder how well the paint actually sticks or if they use a certain prep method before laying down the paint. If I went with the chrome ones I thought I'd use some "liquid sandpaper" as a surfacer to help the paint adhere better (it worked well when I repainted my BRM's). Any thoughts or ideas from the painters would be appreciated before I decide which ones to get. Thanks in advance,

A Quick Edit: I bought the chrome versions since I felt they looked so much better. Anybody have any ideas about how to lay paint on them without it flaking off in a few days? I've never tried to paint a chrome wheel before so I'm at a loss right now. Any help would be great. Thanks again,

Hey,
If you really want to make your Flat-4's look awesome, I would say strip off the chrome first, and then paint it. Without stripping the chrome, your detailing is gonna look rough. Good luck!

Nope. You do not need to strip the chrome. I painted my chrome Flat fours a few months ago and the came out great!

Basicly you use an adhesion promoter. It's made to help paint stick to chrome or plastics.

The brand I used was called buldog.

Roughed up the area with 80 grit sand paper by hand.

Then use the Bulldog adhesion promoter, then sealer (if it's smooth enough) I used a black sealer.

Then I used a single stage gloss black.

Sanded.

Adhesion promoter.

Black sealer.

Paint.

Done.

And DONE! 8)

Cool, I also got Bulldog adhesion promoter and I roughed up the surface with some scotch bright pads and sandpaper. I just sprayed the adhesion promoter then layed the paint on. I didn't use a sealer so I'm hoping there won't be any adverse affects. The first rim is actually drying as I'm typing this so I'll see how it all works out once he tape comes off. I've got the chrome center caps painted (pretty tedious work) and one 4.5 chrome rim painted so far with the others to follow soon. I used a slightly more flat black to paint the rim since it appears most original Fuchs were detailed in a dull black. Thanks again for the help,

Well, I finally got them all painted with center caps installed. Hopefully the paint will prove to be more durable than I think. Here they are mounted on the car with 4 wheel disc brakes along with a CB 2" narrowed adjustable beam and dropped spindles.

No, it had BRM's on stock drum brakes for awhile which I now have listed in the classifieds. Unfortunately I can't run them anymore since I've converted to 5x130 discs.

I use to live in Jacksonville but I didn't have BRM's installed when I did. It was basically stock with stock wheels. I did go to a few local shows and drive ins as well as Bug Jam a few times when I lived there. I'm pretty sure I've seen the '66 your talking about with Raders in Jax a few times. Very nice car.

Bringing this post back up. How has the paint been holding up on the chrome. Getting ready to detail and set of repos myself.
