I recently took over a project from a high school student who lost his passion for it... This will be my first vw project and so far I've been enjoying myself learning about these things. My question is do I need to install engine tins on this 1600DP motor ? The deflectors are there...but the rest of the tins are missing. The motor has a really nice cage built around it so I'm not too worried about hitting it....I just don't want to be overheating things. Thanks for your time...This forum is incredible and has made this project exciting for me. |

You MUST run at least a fan shroud, top cylinder tins and oil cooler. If its in a full bodied car (bug, Ghia, etc) you SHOULD run all of the tin. |

In a buggy you just need the basics as John noted above. You don't need the rest of the bottom tins in such an open car. I've never run them and even on big engines, have never had a problem with head or cylinder temps.
Welcome to the samba

I don't have the lower "sled" tins on my buggy but since I spend a lot of time offroading (dirt roading would be more accurate) I do have some heavier gauge steel pushrod protector tins on the bottom of my motor.
I see you are from BC, some great opportunities to get off the beaten path up there. If you think your car might be used to explore off the pavement, you might consider either a full skid plate with "wings" to protect your pushrod tubes or the smaller tins like I have that mount on the motor. When I find a good picture of mine I will post it here for you if you are interested. |

I think it is also very important to have the lower cylinder deflectors that go between the cylinders and pushrod tubes.
With a pre-doghouse fan shroud and a power pulley my buggy used to run a sump oil temperature about 100F above outside. It ran a bit to cold to really get the water out of the oil. |

Yes, good point. There are two different kinds, one that looks like a flat piece of tin that is just bent a little to go underneath and between the cylinders on each side, and the type 3 tin that looks similar to a mirror image of the topside cylinder tin. You should use at least one or the other of those. |

Thanks everyone for replying back..I will definitely look into some heavier tins for around the push rod tubes as I do intend of taking advantage of the BC roads and trails. |
