Another aspect I became aware of regarding extinguishers. It's best to keep them upright. Otherwise they have a propensity to leak slowly.
Summary:
Wine: On it's side
Extinguisher: Upright |

I've heard differently. If it's a powder filled extinguisher, storing it upright in a car will cause the powder to pack into the bottom over time causing it to lose effectiveness. Better to put it on it's side and rotate it every so often. You should be inspecting your extinguishers regularly to identify if they're leaking. OSHA requires me to check the ones in my office every month. |

How do you know if it's a Halon? Is that a brand or the chemical inside?
Which of these should I get and where should I put it?[url]

Just bought the cute 1# one b/c it fit in the slot beside the door. But, looks like that slot is broken, so now I'll need a different one w/ a full lock down clip thing. I also have a 2# one that came w/ the van. No idea what kind that is, it's too big for the bracket by the door...

:bay_blue: First, all should have a fire extinguisher of any kind! Next Halon is no longer used, but if you can find a used one go for it. I like FE-36 all the NASCAR teams use them. Get what you can afford, but you drive a high cost van don't be cheap spend the money and get the best. You spend a lot more just to make your van look good! Like wheels or SA grill they look good but wont save your but! This is what you need! http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5...er+install Also I have 3 in my vans one of each FE-36, Halon, and powered one. And I've seen a lot of fires, I'm a retired fire captain from Colorado. And if you are low on money buy used Ebay ,there are many. :D |

Is the pretty little 1lb one I just bought to fit into the cute little bracket that came with my van even big enough for kitchen fires? Or should it go back and be replaced w/ a 2lb one? Will a 2lb one fit in that space, looks like a good space to put one by the door and all...Actually, I think I already have a 2lb one that came w/ the van, but didn't fit in the pretty little bracket. Maybe I just need a bigger bracket! At least I can say, "I tried!" LOL
Is a 2lb one big enough for an engine fire, or do I need a 5lb one? If I get a 5lb one, where do I put it?
I have kids in car seats. One can't unbuckle himself and the seat I had for him can't be unbuckled by the older one that can unbuckle himself, so I take this all pretty seriously and now I need to get easier to unbuckle car seat for back there too!
I love to shop, but don't get fire extinguishers. What's the difference between a kitchen (assume grease, but could be electrical fire) and an engine fire (grease also electrical)?

I bought one at Autozone just 3-4 days ago.
It came with the same mounting bracket that GW sells individually.
It fit nicely in the spot behind the passenger seat in my Westy syncro.

Googled it for ya:
Quote: What do the A B C ratings mean on Fire Extinguishers?
Fire Extinguisher Ratings
Fire extinguishers are classified by fire type. The A, B, C rating system defines
the kinds of burning materials each fire extinguisher is designed to fight. The number
in front of the A, B, or C indicates the rating size of fire the unit can extinguish.
“A” TRASH–WOOD–PAPER
Fire extinguishers with a Class A rating are effective against fires involving paper, wood,
textiles, and plastics. The primary chemical used to fight these fires is monoammonium
phosphate, because of its ability to smother fires in these types of materials.
To achieve a Class “A” rating, the extinguisher must be capable of putting out a wood
crib, wood panel and excelsior (shredded paper). Ratings are based on the size
of the material that can be repeatedly extinguished.
Rating / Wood Crib (inches) / Wood Panel (Feet) / Excelsior (lbs)
1-A / 20 x 20 x 20 / 8 x 8 / 6
2-A / 25 x 26 x 26 / 10 x 10 / 12
3-A / 30 x 30 x 30 / 12 x 12 / 18
4-A / 33 x 30 x 30 / 14 x 14 / 24
6-A / 38x 38 x 38 / 17 x 17 / 36
10-A / 48 x 48 x 48 / 17 x 17 / 36
“B” LIQUIDS
Fire extinguishers with a Class B rating are effective against flammable liquid fires.
These can be fires where cooking liquids, oil, gasoline, kerosene, or paint have
become ignited. Two commonly used chemicals are effective in fighting these types
of fires. Monoammonium phosphate effectively smothers the fire, while sodium
bicarbonate induces a chemical reaction which extinguishes the fire.
To achieve a class “B” rating, the extinguisher must repeatedly put
out a flaming liquid fire. Ratings are based on the size of the fire.
Rating / Pan Size(sq ft) / Gallons of Heptane
1-B / 2.5 / 3.25
2-B / 5.0 / 6.25
5-B / 12.5 / 15.5
10-B / 25.0 / 31.0
20-B / 50.0 / 65.0
30-B / 75.0 / 95.0
40-B / 100.0 / 125.0
“C” ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
Fire extinguishers with a Class C rating are suitable for fires in “live” electrical
equipment. Both monoammonium phosphate and sodium bicarbonate are commonly
used to fight this type of fire because of their nonconductive properties.
To achieve the Class “C” rating the extinguisher and contents must pass certain
electrical conductivity measurements in accordance with UL711 and UL299.
Fire extinguishers recommended for kitchen & auto are usually rated BC - especially good for grease, liquid fuel & electrical fires.
Household usually are rated ABC - pretty good for almost anything.
Yeah - when in doubt, GET ONE...as big as you can afford & have room to store. |

[explanation snipped]
THANK YOU! OK, so I need ABC. More BC, but never know when camping you'll need A, so can't hurt.
How big does everyone have? Mine came w/ the 2# one, but it didn't fit and is missing the pin. Now that I read the mess a missing pin can make and it doesn't clip anyway and I don't want it in my head one day...Need a new one, will put the broken one in the house.
So, do you have a 2, 5 or 10# one? Bigger? Where do you store it? Safety comes before new bumpers or my pretty wheels!
Fire = no more van or wheels! LOL
tam
Bought the 2# one, on sale at CT for $20.
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/3/HouseHome/...?locale=en
There is a 2.5# one that has twice as much B (stuff what ever that means) and twice the price or 10# one (no bracket), next time it goes on sale and when I figure out where it's supposed to go/fit!? A 5# Walmart one w/ bracket (?) might be better...
THANKS for the kick in the butt when there happen to be a sale! |

I just don't understand people on Samba. You will spend $1,200 on wheels because they are cool and only want to spend $20 on a fire extinguisher and what did you pay for your van? Safety first looks second! In this case bigger is better! And or more then one. :D |

Here is my extinguisher setup.
I have a 15 lbs 4A-60BC extinguisher under the rear seat in its own plywood 'tub' that keeps it at the top and very easy to access and remove. Bigger is better. BTDT with a too small extinguisher....
And for a kitchen fire I like this extinguisher (especially since it is non-toxic and doesn't leave a nasty residue).

I hope this helps someone.
I also have the joseph928 style automatic extinguisher to mount in the engine compartment this Spring. :D |

I thought they needed to be upright??
Can you pull that bench up/open when there are car seats on it? Will try myself when I get the seats installed later...I have a 5 or 10# one in my rental suite, doing nothing anyway...
Never heard of seen that other thing, will look for it. I've always used a full box of baking soda for a kitchen fire.

Where is the original position? Mine came with a small extinguisher that I upgraded, nut not sure if it was in an original spot. Just inside the slider behind the passenger seat. |

Yep, behind the passenger seat on the pillar at floor level. |

Never tried it with car seats on the bench. I'm pretty sure the seat bottom will not open that way. My son has been out of a car seat for a few years so that is not a concern for us. Your situation is obviously different. |

My extinguisher is on the small side - a 3# Halon. But the mount might be of interest. It is a bit of ABS pipe screwed to kitchen cabinet, behind driver's seat.

My broken bracket was mounted behind the passenger seat, by the slider door. What is the biggest size that will fit there? Anyone tried a 3-5# one? is there a bracket I can get for that. Amazon and Walmart have brackets, but wouldn't want to order it and then not have the two fit together...

Thank you, pretty sure you're right. Still waiting for my van, but since the seat belts wrap around the car seat on the bench, thinking it's not going to open. So, no point in putting one in there! LOL

Thank you. Easy enough to go to Home Depot though and find a pipe of some sort that fits the Fire Extinguisher. I want *yours*, it's blue and matches my van. Seriously, if a 3# one is small, then a 2# one is too small, right? Or is there a difference w/ Halon and what ever is in the one I just bought? I'm not understanding exactly where you mounted that though? Is that the seat belt for the front driver side seat?

the 2# one fits w/ room to spare, could go up to 2.5, if not 3-5# one in that spot for those wondering. |
