Hello
Not sure if this is the right place to post,,,,but I was wondering if anybody can tell me about E code engines? I have a block with solid generator-mount(is that what its called ?) The block has an E code, and i cant find any info about it :?
Can someone help?

Are you saying your generator stand is cast-in, and not detachable? Those are 36 (or 25) HP blocks - which should have no letter code at all on them. VW later classed these as the "A" engine and may have stamped them such after a factory overhaul.
An "E" engine on the other hand should have a detachable generator stand. It was a "low octane" version of the 1300SP engine made in very small numbers from early in the 1966 model year through the end of model year 1970. Only 21,603 such engines were produced.

I have a 1959 beetle with a 36 Hp E code engine in it. I took it to mean Exchange.

| Ah, I guess maybe VW used that earlier on and I've not seen that before. Where is the E - before the engine number? |

Cast-in generator stand, yes. Its an old block, 36hp i guess
The code on the block is: E-0501
It is very possible it is exchange but i though that it was a D with two "recycle" arrows around, that was the exchange sign. But mayby they used only E on older engines??
Iam just wondering, because if its shitty old and rare I will have to find a car that suits it :D |

There was time when you purchased a new engine case over the counter from VW that the engine number area was blank.
The idea was that the mechanic who was building it up from the parts in the old engine that he would stamp in the engine number like the old case had.
Well, many didn't stamp in anything and some stamped in a number with meaning only to them. Heck! You could stamp in your name if you wanted to!
Many cars running around with the "original" engine could very likely be a newer case with the proper number stamped in and they don't even know it. I wonder if this is the case every time I see an engine number that isn't straight.
Your number is probably one of those made up numbers by a mechanic. For instance, Ernie - May First? Eddies 501st rebuild? Mechanic E 501st day of work? Or any variation you can come up with.
