| When reinstalling, make sure you have the cluster 'positive' wire UNDER the copper terminal on the unit. This is obvious, but I overlooked it. Explains why it was working fine on the bench but not working in the van. |

| Help!! The link to the website that has the repair is no longer working! Can someone please just post the information here? It sounds like many people have actually repair their clock by following whatever procedure this is. Unfortunately it is no longer available. Thank you everyone who might be able to help |

I just don't use it anymore.
That being said, I have the time set to '4:18'.
Some of you will know why!

@nwaite DUDE!! Y'all are incredible for posting that info about the ground ribbon needing to be UNDER the clock ground clip. Rearranging that ribbon fixed the clock on the '82 I just bought, clock hadn't worked for years - I like to think that I was hot on the trail, but definitely very glad I came across this thread!!
Just gonna mention some relevant multimeter fiddling that I did, in case it can help anybody out down the line:
On my 1982 Vanagon L 2.0L Air-cooled Gas:
With battery ground connected and the T14 connector unattached, I read ~12V between the clock pin 7 and ground pin 5
With battery ground connected and T14 attached to the instrument cluster, I read ~12V between the positive clock terminal (the connection with the white clip) and ground, which reassured me that my ribbons/foil were intact, but (!) strangely the reading between the positive and negative clock terminal was only ~600-650mV
That ~600mV reading rang a bell as the same "ambient" voltage (forgive my cursory circuits knowledge) that I measured between the +/- clock pins with the instrument cluster entirely disconnected. So, ding ding ding, we've got a bad ground - I found this thread (and noticed that the ribbon-under-clip orientation is actually visible in Bentley 90.8 Fig 3 despite no explicit mention), switched my ribbon around, and bingo! Heard it start ticking when I reconnected the battery (with the T14 installed), and just for my sanity I confirmed that I now read ~12V between the positive and negative clock pins.
Great fun! Thank you based samba! |
