Hello again, Thank you for all the replies for my questions posted on 6/29/2002-'Need help on 56 Oval'

One of the replies- OGGFK@COX mention about:

1. Wire tube front fenders

2. Dimples on flats on early fenders

What are these and how different are they to post '60 fenders? Anybody has photos? The only photos I have are from mags such as VW Trends and Volks World and I don't know what subtle details to look for...they all look the same! Pre '60 bugs are very difficult to locate here in Malaysia so I may have to settle for a '60 or '61...could I get away with it, the search will of cause continue...

Another question is on the door mechanism,
Can i just locate a pre '64 door and swap handles or do I have to modify the mechanism inside? My friend tried swapping handles once on a '62 door but said it didn't work...

Lastly, what's a front clip...never heard of it before...

Thank you & best regards,

Hi

goood to here from you again. Front clip in the front spare tire section of the car. I will take some pictures of wire tube fenders and dimpled rear fenders and email them to you. You will be ok with non dimpled rear fenders if you choose, but in my opinion its best to use wire tube front fenders. Otherwise the wiring for your headlights will need to come from a different place in the harness. It will definitily work either way though. Does your car have semaphores?

Hello...

Thank you for the reply, the front clip is still intact so I guess I would have the holes for the wire tube fender...

The bug does have semaphores...well it use to have, all the mechanism is missing now including the arm. How does it work, do they run on a motor? There are a lot of Morris Minors with semaphores here, can I use them?

Sorry I've so many questions, Pre '60s bugs are so rare here...nobody knows much about them...

Thank you,

You can purchase reproduction "wire tubes" for your fenders from many different shops including Wolfsburg West & Kochs. They are quite expensive at $40/pr.
As for semaphores, they are pretty abuntant as well. Look to spend about $300 for a pair in perfect working order. And the '64 doors should work with no modifications at all. Just install the pull handle from your '56 and it should work

rareairresto is right, you can purchase wire tubes, but to be correct the fender on a 1959 and earlier cars skirt down more on the sides and are just a touch wider. but if you are not worried about that issue, as many people arent, then you are in business. The repop wire tubes are very good quality and fit well.
