I just got a car with a 40hp engine. Small straight up manifold/ head intake ports as usuall. So i start pulling the engine half way apart to reseal it (it runs great but was a little leaky).
I pull the generator stand of to replace the gasket and the opening underneth is the larger style (like on a 1600). now I don't deal with many 40hp's but I was under the belief that 40hp motors all had the quarter sized circular opening under the generator stand.
The engine does measure the correct distance between exaust ports for the 40hp exhaust. (I thought for a moment that it could be a 1500 or 1600 with bored 40hp heads)
For all I know this could be common but I've never seen it. |

Oh crap - I should have proof read before posting that - my fingers weren't in tune with my brain!
Please forgive the typos - the content is still valid.
A typist I'm not!

I seem to remember Tom Wilson's book How to Rebuild you VW Engen meantioned something about the various 1200 case descriptions - I remember the comment about the different oil hole shapes under the gen stand anyway - I don't have it with me to look up - sorry.

The engine number 8,889,094 puts it as a 1965 40hp engine - almost the last of the straight numbers - the following year the 40hp engine got the D letter prefix.
Now you can tell them you have a 1965 40hp parts when you order parts :-)
the major difference with this engine (compared to previous) were the cooling flaps mounted under the fan (previously an annular ring in the fan inlet) to control the engine warm-up.
