I am looking at a european beetle with a 117xxxxxxx serial number but with a 1200 cc engine. Does anyone know if this is standard?

well i am not too sure about the serial number but as far as i know all standards have a few special peices. first off they are very sparse on chrome, and as far as i know the bumpers should not be chromed. hopefully it has the original 3 spoke steering wheel that looks very basic. i hope this helps a little.

Engine numbers for the chassis 117,2000,001 - 117,2200,000 (1977 model) were

D 1,393632 - D1,415,740 (1200 40hp)
AS 401,300 - AS 528,948 (1600)
AJ 0,095,936 - AJ 0,119,687 (1600 FI)

So yes - your engine could be the original. The 1200 engine continued to be made in Germany right up to 1986 - the 1200s were sold mostly in eastern Europe and the UK.

Does it have drum brakes (most Euro models had disc front brakes from 68 onwards but I think the 1200s stayed with drums right through - part of the cheap cost needed to sell cars to some parts of the world).
