OK, My buddies got a '65 stock engine VW...and we put a 30 Pict carb on it(rebuilt, and we have a fuel filter on it, and we've been driving it for a couple days now, and when you're driving down the road, it will randomly quit. Now, we think it's the fuel pump, cause it's not electrical, and the carb is clean(plus the filter keeps dirt out) and we can see fuel in the filter(between pump and carb) but the engine will quit, and then a while later, he can start it up, and it will run for a little bit, then it will quit again...no when I say a "little bit" I mean, anything from 1 minute to 10 minutes...and it just randomly quits. Yesterday we tried a lot of things, and so far we've got no leads, changed carbs, nothing...blew the fuel lines out, etc. Check distributor, and spark(sparked me, feels like we've got juice ;) ) But the pump is the only thing we didn't swap. Thanks for your help everyone, Peace!

I had a car once that would do what you discribe. The gas tank wasnt venting and it would actually suck the tank in like a milk carton. Next time it does it try taking the gas cap off and restarting it. If that is it you may need to find a way to vent the tank.

Also I had a few cars that the fuse box would ground against the side of the body. Where it comes through under the dash. You may have lost the clip that is supposed to hold the fuse box in place

If there one thing I know for sure is that cars dont fix themselves, so the problem is something small that you are overlooking.

A bad coil will do the same thing, it will Run when cool, die when the coil gets hot. Good luck.

I just chased the same problem your having except it was happing much less often. Every couple of days the motor would cut out. Then it started to happen more frequently.
It was the fuel pump. The diaphram was slowly giving way and finally left me stranded. Because it was infrequent I was getting false fuel pump vacume readings.
Good luck finding your problem!!!
