Forgive my ignorance on this but I've neglected my VW knowledge over the past few years. What are the handling/clearance benefits of a narrowed beam? It seems like whatever fender clearance you'd gain on the outside, you'd lose on the inner fender. And what's with cutting off the shock towers? |

Clearance is not a problem. Ive narrrowed link pin beams 5.5 inches and it still turned lock to lock(with drop spinndles). Handleing is alittle different. You have to make up the difference in the pitman arm becuace you loose the stock geometry when you go that narrow. But up to 4 inches you notice nothing.
As far as cutting off the shock towers? Well for some there isnt much choice. You must sacrifise for the look you want. But I will say this, the narrower you go the less you notice that the shock towers arent there. Its like a peice of pliewood. When its 8 foot long its easy to bend, but the more you cut off it the harder to bend it gets. Same story with the leafs in a front beam. Compared to a car that is just lowered with no dropspindles a car with a narrowed beam and no shock towers rides much-much better.
Now Im not saying that you couldnt have shock towers on a beam narrowed even 5.5inches, because you can. But it takes some fabrication. And when I tell people the my price for the towers and intalling them most people say, "thats OK". |
