Do you have to remove the entire dash to get to the in-dash speaker on a 71 Std? Or, can you just take that "grill" off. I don't want to pry it off if it's not supposed to come off that way?

I just replaced the one in my '71 Super - I suppose it is the same. No need to remove the dash. Access is from the trunk. You have to disconnect and move the defrost heather tube. The speaker is held in place by a wire braket with a set screw holding the speaker up to the grill. Mine had a cardboard gasket fasted to the front lip with 2 screws. I replaced the stock with a 40watt, 5" from pep boys. I had to trim two of the "ears" off the corners of the new speaker. Works fine with the stock vw radio.
