I'm not sure about the subaru motors you have quoted but I have a ej25 out of an 2006 WRX STi in my Thing.

DROOL.... the best of both worlds Thing and STi
You and I will be talking if I ever find a wrecked STi to swap out my WRX. Then I can put the ej205 in the Thing. |

its funny how similar to VW that engine looks. The distributor, alternator, oil pump (?) are all in the same spot, and the oil sender is just below. Its almost like a spiritual successor to the VW air cooled engine. |

subaru ea-71 is 1600cc 69hp produced from 1976-1987
subaru ea-81 is 1800cc 74hp produced from 1980-1989 and is a stroked version of the ea-71
They are very small watercooled engines and very easy to install in a vw because u dont need to cut the engine bay but u have to put somewhere the radiator and u need the kennedy adapter plate. |

doesn't seem like much of a gain for the addition of the radiator and adapter. am i missing something? |

I too not sure if you wanna fool around with that Subaru engine. If it takes work might as well do it with the more modern stuff. It's alot to do but when done it's well worth it. It's like a new car without the payments (including A/C). STI Daily Driver in Paradise 4us4.
Thanks

The HP numbers are deceiving, the ea71 makes something like 90 ft of torque  and really wakes up a Vdub |

:D
I just put a subi ea81 in my VW trike. Power band is different. More torque, more power and the 8" cherry bombs make it sound meaty. I wonder why I didn't do it sooner. |
