Is there a way to tell if my tank is corroded on the inside. I have replaced three fuel filters in the last 4 months. She will act like she is starved for gas. I replace the filter and its all good. For a while anyway. Waddyathink? Time for a new tank. Best place to get a replacement. Or can I wash all the gagank out and treat the inside somehow? Danke. |

I would say you probably need a new tank.

Well, what's the history on the van? I mean if you've been using it as a daily driver for 10 years and this just started to happen I'd have completely different suggestions than if you just bought it and it sat outside unused for 5 years.
So, what's the prior history leading up to this problem?

Does your tank leak at all? If it doesn't leak then I see no reason why you couldn't
take it off an clean it out. May be a great time to replace the grommets before
they dry out and you start developing leaks there.
If you are looking for a somewhat inexpensive replacment, I got mine at BD.
I sparyed it with primer for a few coats, then several coats of bedliner and a
another coat or two of paint. Mine had a hole in it, that's why I replaced it.
Make sure that BD gets you the correct tank if you use them. They sent me the
wrong tank the first time. It was in the wrong labeled box but they made good.
Also food for thought. The outlet to the fuel pump on the new tank is smaller
than the inlet to the fuel pump, so I used a square filter between the two.
Two different sizes on each end of the filter.
Good luck!............................Tim

I just pulled mine off. It had been sitting 6 years. Drained the "fuel" that remained, washed it with very hot water and Dawn detergent, rinsed it with about five pounds of baking soda and many gallons of water. Gave it a good visual inspection and detected no serious problems. Put a new line/grommet kit on it after painting. Good to go. Be careful removing the vapor trap bottles if you have them. They get brittle and the connectors are easy to snap off the top. |
