Zac,
I have a 56. I struggled with this issue. You could get by with italian rears, they would probably fit only "ok" with some modification and tweaking. Hot VWs published an article a few months back on aftermarket rears--one of them has the strengthening pleats stamped into the flange. Even with these pleats that "sort of" match an original oval fender, you won't be fooling anyone though. Perhaps someone else knows what month of HVWs back issue contains this article??? I ended up buying driving three hours to buy a pair of originals and messing with them all weekend with pliers and a mig welder until they were straight enough to be bodyworked.

On the fronts, you have to go with 59 down originals. They are a bit wider than the later fenders and they skirt down a little more on the outside. The area where they meet the running board is different. The headlight bucket is shaped differently and they have a metal headlight wire conduit tube that bolts to your quarter panel. If you are stuck with using aftermarket fenders on your car, I have heard that you can get very nice fenders from Kustom One, and complete bullet turn signal assemblies from Vintage Parts, as well as others.

If you and your oval are new to one another, you will notice over time that almost all of the aftermarket sheetmetal available is incorrect and will not fit (or be correct for) your car. Luckily there are plenty of folks here on this forum who can tell you EXACTLY what years of certain parts will fit your car.

Good luck!!!
