1977 type4 FI 010 auto trans.

I picked up a new Israeli made fuel filter today from Cip1.ca

I am about to attach it but I swear I see some sort of silver foil sealed to the input side of the filter.

I have never seen this before. do I puncture it?(wtf!?) or do I just install it?

A silver foil seal makes zero sense to me but I figure I would consult the gurus before I proceed.

I have used the search and cant find zilch.

that's how they are. cut open the filter and you'll understand why.

The plug them to prevent them from being filled with C4?

They are really minature grenades?

it isn't a seal, it's the end cap of the filter media. also, the small end is the outlet not the inlet. that's how this kind of filter works, in order for the liquid to pass through the media is has to be forced out the pleated media, so it enters the media from the middle and exits through the pleats. note at the end with the 'seal' the aluminum is well shy of the outlet. there are even little bumps on the inside of the plastic filter casing to prevent the filter from closing off the outlet.

Seems like it would have been pretty easy to just blow on the filter to see if it would pass fluids or not. Or just cut your old filter open to see what's in there, that's usually a pretty good thing to do anyway.

:lol: I'm asking the same thing! But Really...thanks Scott. I can well imagine that many people might replace fifty fuel filters before noticing something you have actually seen 49 times.

I know I did....thats why I cut the fuel filters open too.

By the way...what is in that filter.... is not what was inside of the original square filters...maybe for the L-jet as well (not sure on that one).....but most certainly for the D-jet fuel filters that came on type 3 and 4.

Inside of the Square D-jet filters....the filter media was square....that one looks square too....is it scott?

And...on the ORIGINAL square D-jet filters.....the filtration did not happen from the inside out like that. It came in one end into a chamber that took up about 1/3 of the total plastic housing volume. Went through a "packed lint" fiber media filter and then entered the pleated face of a block filter that was cemented in with a plastisol. It exited the pleated filter against the face of the outlet tube.

The fiber/lint media was a pre-filter to keep silt from clogging the pleat valeys prematurely. It had a really high volume of area and could hold tons of silt without restricting the flow to the pleated filter.

There was a cutaway in one of the manuals somewhere. That company in israel....stopped putting the lint filters in D-jet square filters in the late 80's or early 90's. The D-jet filters then began living about 1/2 the normal life so I quit using them. Ray

no, it's round. the original bosch filters are more complicated inside for sure. typical aftermarket production where the repro is a pale version of the original.
