I've had this idea for a wile so i finally decided to make a thread for this. The goal is to collect pictures and stories of vanagon mechanical failures, crashes, body damage, fires and any other damage. Hopefully this could help some people avoid doing the same mistakes or get stuff fixed before the disaster happens, and comfort other worried about crash safety.

I'll go first:
This is a syncro i got for parts. I was told the owners daughter ran of the road and rolled on a field. (I got it a year or two after the accident, the snow has noting to do with it).

Rust! This was my first car, 1987 syncro doka. The rear of the sill was rusted out due to water from the bed running down the side and in to the locker, were it rusted trough to the sill and attacked from the inside. something to watch out for for the doka people. It finally gave up when, during a wheel change, the jack point started bending in to the sill.

Now, dig up those pictures and stories and have fun!

With all due respect, this idea is bad joo-joo. We allready have plenty of pictures of burned, crashed, and rusted out Vans, a simple search will bring up 100's of photos.
On a side note.... digging up those pictures and stories is not fun

It is a good thing to be informed and warned, but I agree, let's not have a "bummer thread" of sad and scary pictures. I get a little sick every time I see a picture of a van in flames or crunched.

maybe if there was a way to put a positive spin on it? like thankful for what you walked away from...........

The frozen syncro pics make me shiver with cold. :(

I tend to agree that this might be a 'bummer' thread that few would want to visit more than once. While it's a good idea to inform regarding vanagon weaknesses perhaps it could be done in a more genteel way.

If you want carnage, search or look in the galleries. There is plenty...

Tread lightly on this 'tread'. Hahahaha. Yeah, this adds nothing to the collective that hasn't already been added in the other 'treads' dealing with this topic.

Wow, I was all excited for this and I'm surprised everybody seems to be taking it so seriously! I mean the OP's pics aren't even all that bad! And unless there is some other thread where busted up Vanagon pics are consolidated I disagree with the notion that it is easy to find pics like this, they are fairly common but very spread out and rather difficult to search for.

They're just vans!

Wimps, the lot of them.........
The rust out on the jack point_picture speaks a 1000 words. I can tell you not to buy a rusty van, replace your fuel lines, put the proper strength tires on but you may not understand the issue.
Graphic photos hit home.

Thanks, its a M C Escher sketch/painting. Made me think of my Grateful Dead, skirt wearing, kind hippy bro on tour days.

It is actually very sad just how serious the tones have become around here lately. Lighten up people, it's all in good fun. If Vanagons weren't fun, I wouldn't own one.

I, for one, find destruction photos very interesting. Not from a morbid standpoint, but from a technical one. You can learn a whole lot from just studying photos of bent up sheetmetal. I do not enjoy hearing about someone else's loss, but the results are interesting nonetheless.

Agreed. NTSB does it all day long.

This is one of those threads that's easy to not open for those thinking it's too morbid. But there's certainly some education in seeing photos of this topic and I'd be one viewing it with interest.

As someone that has been on here for a while, and has read many a tragic thread, I agree there is nothing positive about tragic photos and stories.

We have read so many stories and there is definitely an archive for already that genre.

I think benplace.com had some tragic photos on there.

"Change your fuel lines"

debbiej Thu Nov 18, 2010 12:02 pm

my very favorite threads here are the ones featuring vanagons out in the wilds, woods and water...

I agree that it is really helpful to have illustrated things that can happen through neglect or lack of knowledge.

but "car"nage just for the thrill factor?  to each their own.

in real life, I pass accidents with eyes averted. in fact going to a junk yard makes me kind of sad.

if this thread does get going with pictures of disasters, we wimps can avoid it, or steel ourselves before taking a peek.

I had a '79 Rabbit, yellow with black interior, 5-speed, rare and perfect. Sold it to a guy and less than a year later saw it in a u-pull-it-yard. The front end was completely smashed and it was stripped of everything of value. I only recognized it by a couple of cracks in the dash and the flat-black rear hatch decal around the window. I almost threw up.

Okay! Back to Happy Vanagon Threads!

thummmper Thu Nov 18, 2010 1:11 pm

murphys law dept. crash testing at its finest.
chronicalling the problems of the vanagon? of course we do. this could be a centralization tool for data. like when my middie implodes, we will know why. plus, Im waiting for someone to make a shell into a garden window/ breakfast nook. with ferns just outside.....
