is there anywhere i can find a 1960 nose cone for my '63 trans? the car had a 63 nose cone and it didnt quite fit properly and it tilted the engine up about an inch so my cooling tin wouldnt fit correctly. i think i broke the front trans mount and since im allready pulling the transaxle i might as well correct that too.
thanks.

a 60 trans is a split case trans....don't think you can swap it to a later type trans.

DAMN.. i was thinking about that. ive never looked at the cones to compare. so how could i make this trans bolt up square?

I think the first thing would be to figure out what is not right. Why isn't it in there straight. Otherwise, you can always fab up a bracket to move the front mount up or down.

1- Bus Nose cone
2- Bus Hockey Stick
3- 1960 Front Trans. Mount
4- Nose Cone Gasket
5- Might as well Replace Rear Trans. Cradle Mounts
6- If you Find a New Bus Hockey Stick, I've heard they are Dimpled on Both sides. But if you Get a used one you'll have to dimple it on the other side, Just make sure you don't drill too big of a dimple. It will affect your Shifting, ask me how I know. Thank You PO :x
7- Gasket Sealer
Assemble and Drive :D
I am running the same set-up in my 60'
Just wanted to add that I believe there is a thread on putting the dimple in the hockey stick. You might want to do a search as I think it's not exactly 180 degrees from the original one. I'll see if I can find it.

sweet thanks guys. ive been looking for a thread on this but havent really seen one about the dimpling. this seems like a lot better way to go than cutting off my original mount.

I had that same problem back in the day when I put a 67 trans in my 1960. When I got my car it had a 63? trans in it already but if I can remember correctly the motor was not in the engine bay the way it should have been. So When Iput my new motor and 67 trans I made an adapter plate out of 1/2" plate and the stock oval 67 mount. First I drilled the holes in the plate to fit the studs in the 60 pan. Then I put the 67 trans in with a case bolted on along with some tin. I moved the trans around until I got the motor and tin fitted the best I could. Once I got that, I marked where the 67 mount would bolt to the plate and then drilled the holes for the mount. Its been a long time since then ('98) but I think I changed the rear crossmember over to the 67 as well.

Why do the 1960s have so many one year issues??

lovethatconvertible Wed Nov 24, 2010 3:15 pm

Because they are cool 8) Anyway I remember reading somewhere that they slanted the engine and transmission 2 degrees from previous years, hence the 1960 one year only dip stick with the red painted handle. My info could be a little off maybe one of the Samba Masters could ring in on this.
