ok here is the dill
my girlfreind has a 56 body on a 69 frame with a 73?74 engine
it has ran great for the past year now
but the past 2 weeks we have been getting problems first it died at her home an it wold not start when u turned the switch we thought well maybe the coil replaced it an the alternator brushs an the voltage regulator //aprxmatly 5 days later// 2 days ago she was at work getting ready to leave an she let the car warm up it set for say 10 min warming she drove a bout the 100yards an it lost power an died her father came an roll started it an drove it home with no lights because the lights drained the power
so i thought maybe it was the belt was loose an not spinning the alternator fast enought to charge the battery as far as i no it wasn't it the battery has full charge it won't turn over i am now thinking that it is a starter wire but not really sure
u got a answer or a idea shoot i will take all i can

Wow, very true. Very fun to read. Um, check the wires in your ignition and make sure they are not crossing each other. Check the wires on your starter and make sure they are all on and happy. Um, the alternator/generator will not stop the ability to start it up, that just has to do with keeping a charge in the battery and your headlights nice and bright. So, my ideas, check your wiring to the starter and to your ignition switch. Never know, maybe the solenoid on the starter has died and it is time for a new one.
Good luck.

You say it has an alternator, and you've replaced the brushes in it and voltage regulator? If the battery terminals are clean and you know you have a good battery, it sounds like a charging problem. I would remove the alternator and have it tested at Autozone, Pepboys, Kragens.....which ever auto parts store is near you. In most cases these auto parts stores will test starters, alternators, and batteries free of charge. Good luck.....and let us know how it turns out.

Okay. I am the girl who owns the poor beetle that is suffering and the current girlfriend of the sweetheart who posted this question originally to try and find some help. To all who offered advice pertaining to the real problem (my car not running), thank you. To the jack-hole who thinks he's so much better than everyone else, go back to looking at your child porn and leave the rest of us alone. No one asked you to critique anyone's fricken English! As it stands, my car will start, but won't run for long. Hopefully, I've just gotten a hold of a bad voltage regulator and it's as simple as that, but I can't help but to fear the worst. Currently we are still unsure about everything, but I've had about all that I can take from her. Thanks again and keep the comments coming. We'll keep you posted on the latest developments.

I think it's your negativity that keeps it from running. Karma is a bitch, ain't it? If that sweetheart of yours ain't doing it for you, you just give me the word and I'll show your jackhole what it's all about, babe. We'll kick sweetheart to the curb. Besides, he can't fix your car. What good is he? He sounds like a real winner with his mechanic skills. Do his bed skills match? I bet they do with a name like bumblebee! On second thought, don't call me. You sound like you've been ridden hard and put away wet - multiple times.

Well, she is running, but only until her battery runs out. I sent her to my grandpa who is a car man just not an expert with VW's, so hopefully he's going to check it all out. I figure that it's just a bad voltage regulator since everything else wiring wise and all checks out. She's stressed me out, that's for sure. I just can't trust my poor lil' VW anymore. I hate it, but I think I'm going to sell her after we get this problem fixed. Next year I'll be commuting to college and she just can't make the 40 mile drive there and back everyday. And I'm in that situation where I can't afford two vehichles, so she's probabally going to be for sale soon. I do appreciate everyone's suggestions.(well except that one guy who seems to be a real ass) I love the vintage VW's, but I don't feel like I can feesibly keep her. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

Well, she's at a local mechanic shop right now. We still haven't been able to figure it out, so maybe they can. (Geez, I hope so!)It's snowing pretty heavy here and the mechanic hasn't called me back so I don't know what is going on with her right now. Hopefully I'll have her back by the weekend. Thanks again and I'll keep you updated.
