The right side latching plate on my 69 912 Targa was missing the lower plastic when I purchased my car and the door only closed completely occasionally. I replace the plate with a reproduction that was claimed by Pelican Parts to be the proper latch plate. I installed it in the same position as the old one and have adjusted and readjusted to get the door to latch full shut. If I shut the door hard it just bounces back open. If I close it lightly it will latch to the partial shut position but not to full closed.
Am I missing something? I have put hours into it with the same results. Any Ideas? Thanks

Sorry no ideas but you may want to post this on the 356 Registry.

Sounds like a broken spring in the latch assembly.

i can relate as i have had this problem with many older vw and 356 doors. in general-the catch has to have the very slightest tilt back at top it seems. and after hours and dozens of adjustments later the threads on the holding screws get 'polished' and will not hold. slaming the door only moves the plate(even though it doesn't seem like it). forget where the plate used to be-get some new screws-bring the catch out-even if it means the door does not align right(sticks out). when you figure the right height and 'cant'-then move in by small amounts till you get the best adjustment you can hope for. if your car has been hit-things may be less then perfect as far as fit(original fit). you'll get it!
