Experiment complete
The good-
Got all of the aluminum off the exhaust pipes
The bad-
Used 7 gallons at $5-7 a gal
Fairly dangerous, toxic cloud, just not good for your health
Got to weld up were it ate through near a flange.
Verdict-
Would I use it again?
Hell ya! Just not on type 4 heat exchangers, would have been a whole lot simpler to get 411/412 j pipes since they are only preheater tubes. For misc part cleaning/ paint removal this concoction would work well. |

If it ate through...then you already had a full rust through right there. Murtiatic will NOT eat steel. It will eat iron oxide (rust) Ray |

I bet was the heat exchanger that I put into the NaOH, it's definitely repairable. |

Interesting and funny. But that's not fair to destroy that Peugeot mostly because it's french.
I'll have to destroy a couple of english cars one of these days...    |

The French are allowed to make cars again? When did that happen?
I thought the UN council on automotive styling morality put a stop to that after the Citroen 2CV......

 Alas, the 2CV wasn't the worst. Renault is doing absolute crap since at least 30 years. And people keep buying...
It's true that I'm not particularly proud of the french automotive production... But they did some pretty cool cars long after the Citroën 2CV  . Like this :

Thats is sweet!....I just don't like that really huge black antenna on the right rear  .
Actually the French car industry suffers from some of the same things GM does. Not a lack of competance by any means. More of an inconsistancy issue.
There will be cars that are very mechanically competant....but are stylistically or practically lacking...and then those that are works of art...that have mechanical issues.
Actually the 2cv....people can complain...but it is teh only car in the world that either matched or met the production #'s of the beetle.Ray |

100% true :( . But even worse than GM. The difference is that french people loves to buy french cars. It's what saves Peugeot, Renault and Citroën... While in the U.S people used to buy mostly U.S cars but from the 1970's they started to buy at least as much japanese cars than U.S. :? |

I played with muriatic acid again today:
before:
after:
There was a little wire wheeling involved but not much, the HCl did all the hard work. |

How long of a dip-time was it? |
|

dip time varies by how much rust is on it. the flywheel only took about 20 minutes, a couple of the engine tin pieces took about 30-45 minutes(I probably didn't de-grease it enough, acid doesn't do shit to grease). I didn' take any before ot after pics of the wheel well, but it only took 20 minutes of so(i had to get creative since i only had 3 gallons of acid and a fairly small "dip tank"). I also finally got the sunroof cables out of the stainless guides, they were soaking all day long and still had a bunch of rust on them. Stainless looks like crap after being dipped, must be zinc in the alloy. |

Leslies pool supplies shows a 2-pack of 29% muriatic acid gallons for $11.59.
What does it do to paint? |

It slowly softens/strips it off, thats why i had to wire wheel afterwards.
Ninja edit-I get my acid at Lowes $7.23 a gallon, in the paint section. I also got some at a local grocery store for $5 a gallon in the pool maint section. Hopefully walmart will restock their pool section soon. |

It took off the paint too? |

yes and no, some of the paint fell right off while i was rinsing the parts after the dip. It was a lot easier to wire wheel the paint off. I wouldn't call muriatic acid a paint striper, it is a damn good rust dissolver. |

I did my fuel tank today with Muriatic Acid, cleaned it out thoroughly, but dissolved the standard mesh 'filter' that is in there, which I completely forgot about.
You obviously have to be very careful with it, as it eats skin up very easily, damages plastics too...
So far, I've found that paint slips right of and as you say, just use a wirewheel on whatever is left.
Love it when dangerous substances work better than normal, recommended solutions  |

I believe those mesh filters are a galvanized mesh so they are high in zinc, which is almost as reactive as aluminum. I'm getting a little reckless with the stuff, i have been sticking my bare hand into the dip tank to grab parts, don't advise that if you have have any open wounds. I have been going through my crap looking for stuff that needs de-rusting, don't want to waste the 3 gallons of acid, i did: the 3 pieces of rear engine tin, front engine tin, 228mm flywheel, spare tire well, type 4 distributor drive, sunroof cables, t4 dipstick, and the trigger wheel for my MS setup. Good times.
Interesting note- I just dunked the jack that I got from Russ, the parts that are parkerised weren't affected by the acid, thats some pretty badass stuff! |

your right, i just looked at the one i took out of my tank.
When i disassembled the core motor, i degreased all the parts and just left them in the shed. everything got rusty, derr herp herp. so i cleaned up the oil pickup tube, and the hardware(even though I am getting the Raby bolt package)
So it seems the acid keeps pretty good, its still eating rust like a fat kid eats cake, lol. the plastic tub its in hasn't melted yet. |
